Like many young people in their twenties, my music was confined to what I'd heard in high school. When I attended graduate school (MFA Creative Writing) at the University of Alabama in the early 1990's I was furtunate to stumble across an independent record store (Whirligigs) in Tuscaloosa (gotta love that name) filled with the grooviest new sounds playing on non-comercial radio.
While the record store is no longer in business (gosh what a loss), Mark and the gang that ran it opened me up to so many new sounds. Thankfully, Pandora is up and running now because without it all these new sounds would be impossible for cats like me to access.
If you worship the light sounds of J-rock, groove to all things trip-hop and techno, need a dose of acid jazz on the fly when down, and respect our great fathers of blues and jazz--and most importantly--understand that every minute some beautiful soul is cobbling together new songs that inspire smiles and tears--then give me a call out.
