My soundtrack spans five decades. My musical tastes are as varied as my moods, but lately, I'm most satisfied with gentle melodies and subtle lyrics that provoke a sustained, bittersweet message. The songwriting skill of Willie Porter has recently drawn my attention.
My initial interest in music in the early 60s led me to the likes of Fairport Convention, Maddy Pryor, and the haunting melodies of the Emerald Isle. The Irish, indeed, are the only ones who truly know how to celebrate ruin. The 70s represented my discovery of Latin and Afro-American beats along with Classic Jazz: Santana, Muddy Waters, Celia Cruz,Ron Carter. I lived in Europe in the 80s where I was introduced to the passionate wailing of the Spanish flamenco and the commercial rep for that genre:The Gypsy Kings. The 90s, I became attracted to the Alternative movement in both Jazz and Rock. The new century brings me full circle back to the Gaelic fiddle. Who knows what's next?
