Buffalo NY native Joel S. Kumro is a candidate for the Master of Arts in Liturgical Music at Saint John’s University, in Collegeville, MN, where he studies organ with Kim Kasling and voice with Carolyn Finley. Joel received an undergraduate music degree from SUNY Buffalo State, in Buffalo NY, where he studied voice and piano. Joel went on to study organ privately with Margaret Harper at the Eastman School of Music.
Joel is the Director of Music at Our Lady of Peace Church in Minneapolis, MN, where he serves as organist, conducts the adult choir and ensemble, and supervises the children’s choir.
Joel is an active performer. As an organist, he has performed for several organizations including the Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedral Musicians, Church Musicians Guild of Buffalo and the Cheektowaga Community Chorus. Joel has also served as guest organist for various liturgical celebrations at many churches including St. Joseph Cathedral, Our Lady of Victory Basilica, and Christ the King Seminary. As an accompanist, Joel has performed on organ, piano, and harpsichord for several soloists and ensembles including the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus. As a tenor, he has appeared as vocal soloist with many organizations including the Amherst Chamber Ensembles, Camerata di San Antonio Orchestra, Buffalo Diocesan Festival Chorus, Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus, and the Buffalo State College Chamber Choir. In 2012, he was a featured soloist for the dedication ceremony of the new Robert H. Jackson U.S. Courthouse in Buffalo.
Joel is a member of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM,) and the American Guild of Organists. He has been a recipient of the NPM Galiano-Rockville Centre Chapter Scholarship, the Father Donald Boyarski Endowed Memorial Scholarship, the Msgr. Kawalec Memorial Organ Scholarship, the Chiavetta Memorial Music Scholarship, and the National School Choral Award.
