I was raised with Coltrane, Carole King, The Andrew Sisters, Oscar Peterson, 1970s Protest Songs and Early Gospel music. Ella Fitzgerald, blind Gary Davis and Queen and the Beatles. My dad has a Jewish Music radio program and we have almost 1,000 Jewish Music CDs at home. If I hear Segovia, I think of my mom, who listened to track after track of this wonderful guitar after the kids went to school ( (I know this from being home with a fever or something, and I would watch her drink coffee and read the New yorker during those few moments of lull between the tide of kids and house and carpool). My dad taught me to like shmaltzy 1940s music, my uncle siggy is my blues and folk mentor. Classical music? my grandparents don't know how to use a microwave, but under another uncle's guidance managed to burn hundreds of classical cds from the library (we think this is hilarious) I like Shostakovitch, Chopin and course, Beethovin.
I wish the lyrics of rap music were nicer, because there is a lot of talent there, and you would listen to it becuase its so good--even if they did rap about butterflies and children and other benign things.
Country music is only good if its bad. I like bluegrass and old country, but can't listen to sappy stories--so its gotta be raw, scratchy violins, raspy, or banjo laden.
Music from the 80s and 90s? I guess I have to be in the mood.
