I had the great fortune of moving to Detroit in 1987, the year that house music exploded there in a big way. Though it was still unknown to most, the amount and quality of DJs, producers and clubs mixing technology and funk was captivating. I was hooked.
Finding house a little too soft and vocal, and techno too hard, I bought my own turntables in 1990 to try and mix the two. A year later, I moved to San Francisco, just as that city's storied rave scene was taking off. Toontown, Rave Called Sharon, Osmosis, Product, Carefree were all a huge influence, as well as the perpetually amazing End Up, where I had my first DJ residency.
Between 1994 and 2004 I was lucky enough to lay down wax for the city's very discriminating dance floor occupants at large clubs, warehouses, and local dives. The influence of Detroit house and early San Francisco rave led me to a vocal-influenced tech house that I love to this day. My library (about 3000 records, all vinyl) is anchored by lots of garage house, runway house, acid house, tech house and a substantial amount of early 1990s techno and rave.
As you can tell from my radio stations, I listen to a lot more than dance music, but electronica still stays dear to my heart.
