I grew up as a "rocker" but thanks to my parents and their varied musical tastes, was exposed to and enjoyed a wide variety of music. Johnny Cash was a favorite in my childhood, and Led Zeppelin is a perrenial favorite. While in college, my tastes expanded as I made new friends and got to hear music they loved. Reggae and The Grateful Dead are now standard for me because of my college experience. Even some of the alternative music of the `80's I now find to be good music. And thanks to my wife I now have an appreciation for Neil Diamond, Paul Simon, Neal Young, etc. In fact, Neal Young's "Harvest Moon" was our wedding song.
I find that music plays an integral part in the poignant moments of my life, and hearing a particular song can bring back memories of a friend, or a place, or an experience along the way.
