And if it isn't music, it's thoroughbred racehorses. What a job I had then; working for Equibase, I had to update the course configurations in Europe. My first stop? Chantilly. Unlike the sameness that characterizes American oval tracks, Chantilly's racecourse is grass and clover...1 and 5/8 miles of undulating bends, graceful turns that wind through magnificent gardens and that long straight home.
It was the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe, one of Europe's most prestigious races, and the 3 year-old Galileo...still undefeated, would be tested for the first time against older horses...Europe's best. Fantasic Light, entered after a year's rest and with no preps, was 19-1. I would have bet him at those odds even if he had three legs.
In deep stretch, Galileo and Rock of Gibralter were engaged in a furious drive that looked comical as Fantastic Light exploded from mid-pack and blew by them as if they were waiting for a train.
Now that's music.
