My first music was my parents' records, my mom's old 45rpms from the '50s and '70s AM radio. Then I discovered LA's punk/post-punk movement. Then I had to re-examine my prejudices about country music because John Doe & Exene Cervenka were namechecking country artists. I listened to a alt rock hipster mix until too many groups started sounding the same in the late '80s. Discovering The Pogues led me into folk roots and world roots musics. At the same time I started digging into vintage jazz.
So my tastes are pretty eclectic. There are some genres I definitely don't dig, but my tastes are broader than the average American's. When enabled by the musicians I'm working with, I will perform in just about any genre I like. I also write songs and sorta slide through genres in my own work as well.
