The Psychedelic Furs

The Psychedelic Furs, whose name was inspired by the 1966 Velvet Underground song "Venus in Furs," were formed in England in 1977 by brothers Richard Butler (vocals) and Tim Butler (bass), along with saxophone player Duncan Kilburn and guitarist Roger Morris. By the time they released their self-titled debut album in 1980, the group had become a sextet, adding guitarist John Ashton and drummer Vince Ely. That album, featuring Butler's hoarse voice (the tone of which suggested John Lydon without the sneer) was a bigger hit in England, where it reached the Top 20, than in the U.S.

Talk Talk Talk (1981) did better, reaching the U.S. Top 100 and producing two British singles chart entries, one of which was "Pretty in Pink," later also a hit in the U.S. when a new version was used as the title song of a film. Forever Now (1982) saw the band reduced to a quartet with the departure of Kilburn and Morris. The rest moved to the U.S., turned to producer Todd Rundgren, and scored a U.S. Top 50 hit with "Love My Way." Ely then left, and the remaining trio of the two Butlers and Ashton made Mirror Moves (1984), the biggest Psychedelic Furs hit yet.

The film Pretty in Pink helped spread their name further before the release of their next album, Midnight to Midnight (1987), which consequently got to number 12 in the U.K. and the Top 30 in the U.S. and included the Top 30 U.S. hit "Heartbreak Beat." Book of Days (1989) marked the return of Vince Ely, but was a considerable commercial disappointment. World Outside (1991) also failed to find an audience. The Psychedelic Furs then folded up shop, and Richard Butler launched a new group, Love Spit Love. The band lasted two albums -- 1994's Love Spit Love and 1997's Trysome Eatone -- and didn't enjoy the monumental success of Butler's original band. Butler kept on. He began writing songs for a supposed solo effort as the '90s came to a close. Those sessions led to new songs with brother Tim and a subsequent Furs reunion in early 2000.

With both Butlers and John Ashton living in upstate New York, the time was right. They tested the waters and their audience for a joint summer tour with the Go-Go's, and the reception was warm. A year later, the Psychedelic Furs -- now featuring Love Spit Love guitarist Richard Fortus and drummer Earl Harvin -- headlined their own club gigs across North America and a classic Richard Butler was keen to be back in the right place. Beautiful Chaos, a live album capturing some of the band's greatest hits from the last tour, was issued in November 2001. Their first live album ever, Beautiful Chaos was a gift for the loyalists. It also introduced their first new song in almost ten years, a somber ballad entitled "Alive." ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

Reminds me of my boyfriend. He moved here from the Phillipines at age 10, and grew up in Downtown L.A. He's got the best stories of concerts, movies made, etc during the 80s n early 90s.
SJU rock it baby at Sals playing pool and the woods and the sag!
Truly unique sound, never had any doubt when you heard Furs you knew...
When I dropped out of college at SJU in the spring of '91 without finishing my Freshman Year (Couldn't stomach SJU and kept getting in fistfights at keggers with ROTC's as me and my buddies skipped classes to briefly protest the Brief Kuwait War). I listened to the cassette in my walkman while my mom's cowboy boyfriend drove me around my hometown of Alexandria, MN in order to pick up a stack of job ap's. Ended up working at the SA. It really fit the mood.
Saw Richard Butler in a very small club with about 50 people just before he released his solo album. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. In a normal voice, I asked Mr. Butler to perform 'Ghost In You'. . .he gave me a small, knowing smile, held up a finger as if to say 'wait a bit', then they performed it as the last song of the set.
True talent!
Hey! I like Pretty In Pink! Aww! the first Psychedelic Furs song I heard...in the music video.
Saw them in 1980 at the Fox on Woodward in Detroit. One of the best shows/bands ever. Went to several arena performances later but the young raw Furs were unbeatable.

Oh how I love them!
It's been awhile since i've heard the FURS. It's KOOL that people get into old school music from the 1980's.
Love the Furs
on any day i can dig this bands violent velet sound, they are unique
feel the Fur
All of This and Nothing is awesome.
Love My Way. This is a pretty cool song. I like it.
this bio doesn't mention Mars Williams at all, what's up with that?
the furs play on my hot water music channel. i will not thumb this band down. yes, i'd heard of them before; yes, i find it weird that they play on that channel, but it certainly doesn't mean they aren't a great FUKKIN band.
One of my favorite bands of the 80's! Saw them a couple of weeks ago with the Go-Gos, Motels and Bow-Wow-Wow. The Furs who I never saw in the 80's put on a great show.
Their 1980 (the black and green one) was their masterpiece. Look past the Pretty/Pink and ye shall find bad-a** tune-age.
I love me some PFurrs....mu l t i p l e unforgettabl e songs on each cd...a staple of New Wave Classic Music they made....most people only know them for Pretty In Pink...but so many other classics!!!
Baby Daddy...lol.
F**king love them!!!
one of the best new wave bands
What an awesome album. Forget about the Pretty In Pink stuff!
Love the Furs. Music today is for the most part total piss. I am so glad for late 70's and early to mid 80's music like this. I love the furs, Adam & the Ants, Depeche Mode, Gang of 4, Devo,Missing Persons,OIng o Boing,Aztec Camera,Duran , S o i u x i e ( s p / ) , G e n X, Billy Idol,The Smiths,Blue Zoo,XTC,Joy Division,Tub e w a y Army,Gary Newman,and the like...
great band
Such a GREAT band, until John Hughes somehow transformed the song Pretty in Pink from being a RAUNCHY DIRTY JOKE ABOUT SOME SLUTTY GIRL'S BEAVER into some kind of saccharine 80's pastel grossness featuring Molly Ringwald and Ducky. Sorry. Gross. This is why I hated growing up in the mid 80's. Pure fake, garish and ostentatious .

Listen to Dumb Waiters sometime. Now that was a song I tell you!
The Furs are very important part of the history of 80's music whether you like it or not. I saw them 13 times and loved every time.
bobopnnit ;bite me!

Saw Psych Furs + Divinyls at some theater in Worcester MA, 1982. God, they were great. Definitely brings back lots of memories.

I wish I could double thumbs up love my way
Hello and thank you for listening to rock-mania your rock leader
burkify
Does Pretty in Pink remind anyone of velvet un.?
The first two albums by the band formed a scathing view of the post modern dystopia that we have all come to know and endure.
The vision a relief from every bodies happy just don't look out your window, stripping bare the scalding alienation and loneliness of the times
I think that I like these guys. the ghost in you is very beautful as are many of their songs.
Save an animal and wear a psychedelic fur instead.
more More MORE - I am ashamed to say I've only seen them three times, but each venue was pretty cozy & each performance was electric, although nothing recently even with semi-solid chances to catch these under-rated pioneers...
better be careful, the kids might start listening and actually like it, then where will we be?!
Brings back the memories!
Love My Way and THe Ghost in YOU are simply perfect songs
