Quilapayun

Chilean group formed in 1965 by Julio Carrasco, Eduardo Carrasco, and Julio Numhauser, later joined by Patricio Castillo. Since its beginning, Quilapayun's lyrics were inspired by social issues related to its country, combining them with autochthonous musical arrangements. In 1966, the band came in first place at the Festival de Festivales, releasing its first album that same year. Folk singer and songwriter Víctor Jara helped the band by promoting Quilapayun's music and making the record Canciones Folklóricas de América together. By the time Julio Numhauser decided to leave, Carlos Quezada and Guillermo Oddo joined in. As Chilean New Song's ambassador, Quilapayun went on its first European tour in 1968. When Julio Carrasco left, Hernán Gómez and Rodolfo Parada became part of Quilapayun's new lineup. Due to Chilean political and social changes in the early '70s, the group settled in foreign countries for more than a decade. ~ Drago Bonacich, Rovi

This freaked me out This isn't fake. Apparently, if you copy and paste this on ten comments in the next ten minutes, you will have the best day of your life tomorrow. You will either get kissed or asked out, if you break this chain you will see a little dead girl in your room tonight. In the next 53 minutes someone will say I love you or I'm sorry This freaked me out This isn't fake.
Áxáláane’ee, yéego ádaoot’í! Nizhónígo nidaooné! Axéhee’! Sincerest Greetings, keep on keeping on! You play beautiful music! Thank You!
It is lamentable that the horror of the Pinochet coup d'etat is noted only as: Due to Chilean political and social changes in the early '70s ... in the bio. Quilapayun was touring out of Chile when the coup fell, and for years they wandered the world, unable to go home, but nonetheless taking the culture of indigenous Andeans and the message of what was happening to their country, with the support and collusion of my own, to audiences everywhere. I was privileged to hear them in Austin, Tx

I too recommend La Cantata Popular de Santa Maria de Iquique. It is wonderfully done telling the story of the miners' struggles that are incredibly powerful and behind much of the growth of unions and workers' rights.

"autochthono u s " - that is a big word.

Why do critics have to try to impress us with with this kind of flowery writing? Chilean. Native. Mixed styles. Good lyrics. Great music.
I think that the biggest Quilapayun Hit was "Cantata Popular Santa Maria de Iquique". I stronge recommend this album, to remember our Latin American History

Quilapayun is one of the most influential bands of the Nueva Canción Chilena. Their style blends traditional Chilean folklore with other latin music as well as pop and rock, to create powerful lyrics about issues such as social injustice and imperialism.
Quilapayun was a major force in the Popular Unity Government of Chile in the 70's. As a result, group members were forced into exile in France after the violent military coup of 1973 in Chile.
Chilean group. Andean-Folk music
