Rare Silk

For a short time, Rare Silk looked as if they were going to be a significant jazz vocal group. Consisting of Gaile Gillaspie, Marylynn Gillaspie, Todd Buffa, and Marguerite Juenemann (replaced by Barbara Reeves and then Jamie Broumas), Rare Silk started out as a swing-oriented group in the vein of the Pied Pipers and (even with the inclusion of a male member) the Andrews Sisters. They appeared with Benny Goodman at the 1980 Playboy Jazz Festival. During the next few years, they modernized their style to include both bop and funkier material, recording for Polydor (1982) and Palo Alto (1985-1986); most notable were their versions of "New York Afternoon," "Red Clay," and "Spain." However, Rare Silk never really caught on and they eventually broke up. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

Great group! Saw them at the Universal Amphitheater in LA during the relative popularity of American Eyes in 1986. If you want a youtube treat, google the performance of Girl Talk circa 1980 in Japan. It was before Todd Buffa joined the group, and is an excellent showcase of the pure talent of the three women (not to minimize Todd's later contribution ) .
I had the privilege for opening for them sometime around 1983 at Other End in New York City. I also loved every note on that CD with New York Afternoon. Exciting to find them here again!
Great album!

My brother-in-l a w , Ted Darryl was the producer of the album and my husband and I went to Caribou Ranch (before it burned down) when they were recording. I was so sad when they broke up...they were so incredibly talented. The album was nominated for a Grammy.

I was friends with Rare Silk and their manager at the time when they recorded their album at Caribou Ranch. Chicago had recorded all of their platinum albums there. What an exciting time...a memory for a life time. I am sad to say I moved from Boulder and we've lost track of each other.

I listened to a lot of Rare Silk while living in the San Francisco Bay Area. I tried buying their CD in the 90's - I was told it stopped being available. I'm glad for Pandora!

I would have to say that Rare Silk's New Weave is my absolute favorite of this style of genre...firs t heard them in the 80's...also wish they would have recorded more....
I saw them at the Kosher Burrito in Boulder CO.back in the 80's. Fabulous show and a great recording legacy left behind for all of us to enjoy... too bad Todd's ego got in the way.
Beautiful arrangement. Their harmonies & phrasing are exquisite. It's available on CD from Polydor 422-910028-2 .
Very tight harmonies... t o o bad their not still together.

They were very good too bad they disappeared. I loved their version of Lush Life. I saw them live years ago. Would be nice to pick up their album on CD but it seems hard to find.

My all time favorite album! Sugar, Red Clay, New Your Afternoon - all of them! Wish they were still recording.
Nothing has ever evoked a "mind's eye" image like Rare Silk's "Red Clay".
At least for me.
One of my all time great vocal interpertati o n s of the Freddie Hubbard Classic.

Damn! This is Hot! I want to sing it.
I loved Todd's arrangements with Rare Silk, and was sad that the group didn't get wider recognition for its smooth and hip sound...

I was at the recording studio at Caribou Ranch when the instrumental of this album was laid. What a wonderful experience that I will never forget. This group was made up of very nice people. Kim Stone, the bass player went on to play with Spyra Gyra and now the Rippingtons.

I had this LP in the mid 80's and loved it!
