I remember this song when I was 8 yrs old and had just got in trouble at school and grandma laid a whooping on me when I got home and she put me in the corner sitting on a chair for about 3 hours and this song happened to play three times when I sat there. Great song but the lyrics are a bit dodgy - always makes me think of I tink I saw a putty tat.

its a love song about having a crush on someone, trying to find the words to tell them "choosing my confessions. " he tries dropping hints "i havent said enough" but then worries that his hint was too big "ive said too much" and the person responded in a way that confused him "i thought i heard u laughing/sin g i n g / t r y . " the whole thing is just really getting to him and he's "losing his religion" (a southern phrase that means he's had it and cant take it any more)
I know "Losing my Religion" is a southern term for losing your mind, but knowing that still the lyrics still confuse.
Lyrically, maybe the best song ever written.
