Jules Massenet (1842-1912) is remembered as one of the most popular French composers of the late Romantic period, best known for his operas, of which he wrote several dozen. His music is notable for its expressive warmth and lyricism, generous vocal writing, brilliant orchestration, and its ability to evoke the exotic settings of his operas. His operas Manon and Werther are secure at the core of the operatic canon, and the “Méditation” from Thaïs is one of the most familiar melodies in classical music.
