Rich Mullins

Rich Mullins was many things to the CCM community: a beloved performer nominated for 12 Dove Awards, an expert on several instruments (including hammered dulcimer, piano, and guitar), and a very successful songwriter, responsible for one of the most popular contemporary praise songs in existence, "Awesome God." Born in 1955 in Richmond, IN, he began playing piano at the age of four, and gradually became proficient on guitar and dulcimer as well. In 1974, he began studying at Cincinnati Bible College, where he wrote praise songs and often performed on acoustic guitar. As part of Zion Ministries, Mullins toured the country and led praise & worship meetings at many retreats. One such meeting, in Nashville, got him signed to a publishing deal by Reunion Records, and Amy Grant recorded his "Sing Your Praise to the Lord" for her 1982 album Age to Age. Just two years later, he signed a recording contract with Reunion as well.

Even early in his career, Mullins' gift for incisive lyrics and folky, Celtic music revealed itself, as on his 1986 self-titled album and the follow-ups Pictures in the Sky and Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth. Though he moved to Kansas in 1988 to study music education at Friends University, Mullins continued to record steadily during the late '80s and early '90s, and also released two volumes of a quasi-song cycle entitled The World as Best as I Remember It. He began to get involved with relief organizations after graduation from Friends, and spent time in the American Southwest teaching music to children on a Navajo reservation. He had recorded two collections of new songs plus another compilation before he was tragically killed in an Illinois car accident in September 1997. The Jesus Record was released posthumously the following year and Here in America, a collection of live recordings and demos accompanied by a DVD, was released in 2003. ~ John Bush, Rovi

You know all the $$ he made never went to him. He took a small paychek and the rest went to charity for all the years that he sang and wrote. He was a true minister. He never knew what he made - always got the same check every payday. His legacy will love on forever. What a great man!!
i miss him. you hear people say all the time when someone dies that God wanted them in heaven more than on earth - i believe that may be true in Rich Mullins case. you know he's probably still writing songs praising our God - for the angels to sing. :) (and can't you see him dancing on the street of gold with bare feet!?) love Rich Mullins - and many times i've wished he had been wearing a seatbelt that day. but truly how can we wish him to be anywhere but with his Lord?
with God :)
I hope to see rich Mullins in heaven someday

Only a small handful of Christian artists walked with me in those early years of my faith in the 80s. Rich Mullins was one of them. His album, Winds of Heaven, especially helped form an intimacy in my walk. God chose to use Mullins's music coupled with the fellowship of my local church and the college ministry of The Navigators to set me on a path I'll never forget. Our God is so good!

If I Stand almost always leaves me weeping as a man longing for his home.

I had the richest blessing to have met him in person years ago.... You could not ask for a more humble man..... I miss him too..... He has touched the hearts of countless 1000's even since he went to be with Jesus.

I can't wait to meet him...
I never heard Rich Mullins while he was alive but I am so blessed to have heard his CD at a Christian Book Store in the early years of the last decade. Every song is a message, a bible story, and a meditation all in one.
Reading what many wrote testifies to what's only done for Christ lasts.Doesnt matter how much you made/had.Wha t a legacy Rich left.Always loved the dulcimer so to hear it from a gifted believer and the Celtic influence..W O W ! He's now one of my favorites
He was on his way to Wichita, KS. to play a concert the next night, I think, when he was killed. I remember the night it happened. I lived in the Wichita area at the time and there were a lot of ticket-holde r s who never got to see him. :( Wish I'd have gotten the opportunity. . . . . . . . .

I saw him in concert in Houston w Margaret Becker, it was an awesome! He came out and did the concert barefooted, that stuck in my mind, so laid back... I'll never forget him doing Awesome God at the end, thanks for the memories Rich Mullins!
Amazing lyrics.
He set the bible to music.

A modern day psalmist that is still such an inspiration.
Can't wait to sing with you in Heaven! It will be glorious!
I am so glad I was introduced to Rich! You are sorely missed, but your music to the Lord lives on... Amen...
"Hold me, Jesus" takes me before the throne every time, Rich, I believe you have already been graced by Father with "Well done, thou good and faithful servant!"
His lyrics always hit the heart of people and I'm sure, made Father God smile.
he is great! xoxo
He lived it.

Another great DVD by Rich Mullins and This Train is a live concert performed at Carpenter's Way Church in Lufkin, Texas in 1997. The DVD is titled Rich Mullins Live. It has 27 songs and includes dialog by Rich. I have about worn my copy out. It is my all time favorite DVD.
miss you, Rich, your music will continue to inspire-
Sometimes By Step. I want it played at my funeral. Never fails to move me to tears.

Rich Mullins remains very dear to my heart because his songs are born out of deep struggles that we all often experience. He is an intense man who shares his heart unabashedly. Keep on Rocking (Elijah Song), Rich!! You have seen Jesus, the Lover of your soul and mine. Thank you for the songs. Still.
Awesome God has to be one of the absolutely most edifying songs I have ever heard. We need more music like this more often! Forever rejoicing at his homecoming yet missing him here with us all!
Enjoyed talking to Rich while in college before he started recording. He was going to seminary.
I was born at the same hospital in Richmond, Indiana as Rich Mullins and born again in the same savior, Jesus Christ. Thank you Lord.
The poerty and art of his music is phenomenal and may never be matched in intensity and ministry simply because it was God breathed. May we learn from this great man of God, and always remember that our lives are not God inspired but God crafted.

12 years missing you! But your music still speaks loudly and clearly. I'm so glad you took the risk to "pull it out".
Rich is my all time favorite songwriter and I miss hearing new music from him. No one else could say what needed to be said quite like Rich. Be God's.

I first saw Rich in 1987 - he has fed my spirit with his inspirationa l gift of song and music for over 20 years. I still remember how I felt when I heard that he died. His influence and inspiration continues through our current-day greats such as Third Day. The most poignant and honest song he wrote was "Hard to get," which gave me comfort in knowing that I was not alone....whe n I felt most alone.
I have live the last 10yrs enjoying and being feed by his musice
Dude, guys, how's your life in Christ going? Does anyone need any prayer? I'll totally pray for you guys. :D (haha ministering online is sweet) Oh man Ive got testimonies! Yesterday my brother and his friends healed an old woman of deafness in Wal-Mart! Jesus is so good! :D

No, you aren't crazy, sirirish! I feel the same way. He died before my child was born, and we listen to a lot of Rich Mullins music, have the "Here In America" CD/DVD set, and the book An Arrow Pointing Toward Heaven. My daughter has loved Rich all her life. There are a lot of good "concert" clips on itunes of him performing. We may miss him now, but the blessing is that, as Christians, we know we will meet Rich in heaven.
i really never listened to rich mullins when he was alive. i got into his music after his death. sometimes when i am listening to his work i actually feel like i miss him and wish i could have met him. crazy?

Rich Mullis put on a great show, he used to get the audience singing, he'd leave the stage and kept us singing some simple child-like song...very original...M i c h a e l R.
Amazing.
The most awsome worship experiences of my life came at the end of a concert of Rich's where his encore was leading the crowd in singing acapella about 10 old hymns that most every one knows. it was amazing, heavenly! I can,t wait either.

Rich Mullins was a master at making music that connected to people on a real level. Something that is sorely missing today in the music industry. His example and faith in Christ was a huge encouragemen t to me. I love his music and I thank God for his ministry. His legacy is huge.
Blessings to all who love Christ and may those who don't know Him come to know how much He loves them.

I was fortunate enough to see Rich Mullins in concert in Atlanta in the mid-nineties . His musical talent was incredible. He brought down the house playing the hammered dulcimer. He's still one of my very favorite artists.

Thanks for your music and ministry including Legacy Camp. It truly is a legacy for you and our Lord. Our itty bitty church has taken this on as a ministry both to Salvation Army adjudicated kids and elsewhere on a reservation. It takes all of us, but we are more blessed than the "students" always. It has been transforming to many, and I hope we have the people-power and God-given will to continue to give. Thanks.
Rich Mullins was more than an amazing poet, singer-songw r i t e r . He was a beloved Christian artist, who also ministered, and his ministry was no. 1 to him, being that worldly things did not appeal to him. He was like a modern day John The Baptist. His music inspires me and uplifts, as well as humbles me.
WE miss you RICH!
Thank you Rich for your imprint on my life. You didn't know me, but you continue to pass on God's message to me, even after all the concerts I went to and Rock Lake Christian Camp is a fading memory. Thank You!
