Richard Julian

A gifted songwriter that has garnered much respect in the underground, folk singer Richard Julian demonstrates a talent for strong melodies and his own distinct sound. Born in Arden, DE, Julian became a classically trained pianist at a young age and found himself writing his own songs in his early teens. A planned move to Los Angeles got him as far as Las Vegas, where he became a keyboard player for several big-name cocktail singers. After spending a year in the town, he moved to New York City and managed to score a recording contract within a few months of arriving. Releasing a self-titled debut on Blackbird/Sire, Julian got his name out nationally and received some good notices. But the following year's Smash Palace was a more varied effort, showcasing his talents for orchestrating many different instruments at once. An excellent effort, it still didn't make much of a financial difference and his label left him before 2000. Still playing live and working on new material, Good Life arrived in 2002 and coincided with a cover of the first album's "Young and Free" by Art Garfunkel. ~ Bradley Torreano, Rovi

I've had the privilege of working with and knowing Richard as a friend and he has been this talented since I knew him at 18. He hasn't forgotten where he's from and that is reflected in his music. And if he never becomes a superstar, well that's just life in the left wing. Randy-Curtai n Up!
Sounds JUST like Steve Poltz! Me Likie!
Check out his vocals on "Little Willies" - a collaboratio n band with Norah Jones. A great album! I didn't realize he had his own stuff until hearing it here.
I saw him at the Crypt at Columbia University, just him and his guitar, and he was awesome. Someone was playing a trumpet outside during the performance so he changed key and just started playing along with it. A talented and charismatic performer.

RJ fits right in nicely with my favorite songwriters- J a c k s o n Browne, Joni mitchell, Dan Fogelberg, Guy Clark, James Taylor,Mark Knopfler,Don Henry,Hugh Prestwood,To m Johnston,Mar c Cohn, David Wilcox, John Hiatt.....yo u get the idea! :-) Yep, good stuff.
Richard Julian is amazing--sma r t , funny, sharp lyrics, exquisite melodies, great guitar pickin' and a voice that goes from sweet to menacing in seconds flat. Listen to a whole CD a couple of times--reall y listen (don't half-assed listen while you're doing something else)--and you'll hear your life.
