The Rippingtons

One of the most popular groups in what is loosely termed "contemporary jazz," the Rippingtons were formed (and have been led ever since) by guitarist/keyboardist Russ Freeman (no relation to the veteran West Coast bop pianist of the same name). Freeman (born February 11, 1960, in Nashville) studied at Cal Arts and UCLA, and recorded Nocturnal Playground as a leader in 1985 for the Brainchild label, a one-man project. In 1987, he was approached to record for the Japanese Alfa label and came up with the Rippingtons name for the all-star group he used on the disc (Moonlighting), an ensemble featuring David Benoit, Kenny G., and Brandon Fields. Their album was released domestically by Passport and became a hit. Freeman soon formed a regular touring band (usually including saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa, bassist Kim Stone, drummer Tony Morales, and percussionist Steve Reid), cut a second disc for Passport, and the group recorded regularly for GRP. Russ Freeman writes all of the music for the Rippingtons, much of which falls in the pop/R&B genre. In the late '90s, the group moved over to the Windham Hill label, recording such albums as Black Diamond (1997), Topaz (1999), Live! Across America, and Life in the Tropics (both in 2000). For 2003's Let It Ripp, the band relied heavily on their horn section to carry the weight of the album. The Latin-flavored Wild Card followed in 2005. The band returned in 2009 with Modern Art. In 2011, The Rippington's released the South of France inspired Côte D'azur. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

Back in the day I went to the Circle Star in San Francisco to see some band, I don't even remember. The Rippingtons opened the show. I could have left when they finished and been a happy guy. I've loved them ever since.
thats what i'm talking about, great music, the Ripps
Heard the live version of Weekend in Monaco on CD101.9 in 1993 (back when NYC had a smooth jazz radio station). Thought, Wow, who was that? I love that sound! Now, over 20 years later, Live In L.A. is still my all-time favorite disc. It's still in my old-school CD rack, along with nearly the entire Ripps collection. It's always the first thing I punch up on my MP3 player when I want to play something that makes you feel good. Those guys are ripping. They're the Rippingtons!
These Rippingtons are ripping up a Fan-tas-tic sound!!! Outstanding musicians!
one of the best cd's ever. one of the best bands ever. simply cannot get enough!!
So nice on a lazy Margarita Sunday a great book ....great music & air conditioning It is 110.
What can we do to get Smooth Jazz back on mainstream radio? Please tell me.
Very smooth, almost like the caress of a warm island breeze across your cheek.
Bought their 1st album in 1989 and now have all of their albums. Saw them live at a free outdoor concert in Boston. That is when Boston had only one smooth jazz station. That station is talk radio now. Thank god for Pandora otherwise I would be living in a smooth jazz desert in New England. Love the Rippingtons.
Je viens de les decouvrir sur Pandora.com en ecoutant une de mes radio preferees Azymuth radio, nice groove for the morning here in Sydney Australia, anybody knows if the're touring the world at the moment by any chance?

AH YEAH. SUCH A FUN ISLAND CARIBBEAN FEEL GROUP. THEY PRODUCE SOME INCREDIBLE MUSIC NOT TO MENTION THE MUSICIANS WHO ARE AWESOME ON THEIR OWN. RUSS FREEMAN IS THE BOMB!
The right wing 1 to 3 per cent do not want us to listen to mellow music. They want the youth to be mesmerized by the no talent rap music to dominate their lives and keep them as slaves to the system. The govt made crack and heroin so popular during the 70s and 80s to keep the masses non motivated.
Eternity sounds like Un-Break My Heart by Toni Braxton.

Is that Chante Moore on vocals?
1st smooth jerz grp I ran into in 1990 in East Orange NJ with Moonlighting . Then came Kilimanjaro, C u r v e s Ahead,St James's Club,Live across America,20th Anniversary Solid live performances featuring David Benoit,Paul Taylor& Jeff Kashiwa.Soli d group.
I have been blessed to meet he Rippington's in person and see them almost every time they come to Cleveland/Ak r o n area! They are my favorite Jazz group and I love their music!!
Had the honour to experience their music live in concert, & WOW,they are exceptional indeed, great memories guys! :)
My favorite Rippington's album is Life In The Tropics. Check it out. There is a really good jazz program called Sunday Morning Jazz on Iheart radio. It's a San Antonio , Tx station 101.9 and comes on from 9:00 a.m until 12:00 p.m. central every Sunday morning. Cheers!
I I have liked this group for years. We here in L.A. thank fully have Padora for this Great Music. Thanks. Ben Cortez

simply outstanding
...Rippingto n s . . . . . w a y cool music to hear on a Sunday morning.....
..all of us jazz lovers need to rally and wake 'em up and have 'em put the jazz back on the airwaves.... . . w e the people need to be the vocal majority not the silent minority.... d o n ' t let this go while just sitting down.....pla y the brass.....st r u m the strings..... . b a n g the drums to a jazzy beat........ .
..to all those that have lost a jazz station near you...its all the gov't fault...they ' v e replaced them with poopy stuff to remove all the pluses that jazz does to all of us and replace it with garbage music to stir us up.(Kock(sp) brothers) are behind it from what i've heard.Seen/h e a r d so many stations just gooff the air and replaced with poop stuff...
Great skiing music...
