Really? Then...you know, if it was played on the radio when Kennedy died, I'm kind of honored to be hearing it.
This was played on the radio when President Kennedy died.
Epic beginning

Thank you to the folks who pinned this down as part where Elias is gunned down running from the VC in Platoon... I wouldn't have even checked if I couldn't stop thinking where have I heard this?? I sooo know this piece Obviously, lovely for its emotive quality.

This music is living breathing history. It starts out hopeless with barely a glimmer of light, and suddenly, you're lifted up, and taken on a flight of complex arrangements composed hundreds of years ago. It can be joyously enlightening and overwhelming at the same time.
I play violin love orchestra my second year playing love it
You should listen to Barber 's Violin Concerto. It will tear your heart out. Get the Perlman recording.

I have yet to hear a piece this good. Melodic, emotional, goes straight for the soul. Just love it. =)
ninjad2006
I recognized this from Elephant Man
this was on carlitos way
When I first heard this piece, I knew that I knew it, but couldn't place it. As I listened, my heart breaking, I slowly remembered… Falling Man (WTC).

This is one of my favorite pieces ever!

Reminds me of the part on Platoon when they're burning the village. And the part when Barnes busts a cap in Willen Dafoe's butt. One of Charlie Sheen's best movies.
PLATOOOOOOOO O O O O O O O O O O N ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Haha right when i heard it i thought of William Dafoe
Also was in an episode of Boondocks, when Huey is serving as Riley's jailor.
In addition to Platoon, it was also used as part of Puff Daddy's "I'll Be Missing You". Of course, nothing beats the entire true version. Love it.

Gallipoli, this is from Gallipoli. It fits so well too. This is by far one of my favorite classical compositions . Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni. I saw that movie when I was 15 and it tore my heart out. If you have never seen it, get it. It's got a very very young Mel Gibson in it too, which is funny. Back before he was a nut. Gallipoli, it's a guy movie like Platoon or Dear Hunter, or Jeremiha Johnson, or Glory, or fill in the blank
It is interesting and at the same time sad that such a beautiful composition can be forever embedded into a Hollywood movie.
When it comes my own turn to lay my weapons down, I shall do so with thankfulness and fatigue. And whatever be my destiny afterward,I shall be glad to lie down with my fathers in honor. It is human at least, if not devine.
Funny, I have not seen Platoon, but immediately recognized this piece as from "a movie". It must be used for many. I was thinking the Thin Red Line...but that was all more modern I think. On reading other comments I see this is a common feeling. Very beautiful. We used to have theme music when we played the game Risk...you know battlefield music for each player. I know, kinda nerdy. This would be a good piece for the end of the game when only one is left standing...b u t no one really wins.

Anybody know where one could find the Agnus Dei set to this, here on Pandora? It was on the Homeworld soundtrack, of all places...
Beautiful!!! ! ! ! ! !
Love-love-lo v e . . .
William Orbit did a cover of this tune.
Hmmm. DJ Tiesto did a remix of this song, only just the first part, unfortunatel y .
mkimball5
I too was introduced to this piece through the film, Platoon, proving, I suppose, that you can be awakened to art in the most surprising places.

I sang the Agnus Dei version of this in my concert choir at Michigan Tech. I cry every time I sing/hear this song, especially when I translate it. The words are beautiful.
Barber rewrote this for choir as "Agnus Dei." It is even more beautiful, if that is possible.
Was moved by this composition before seeing "Platoon." Always a powerfully evocative piece much like John Williams' theme for "Schindler's List."

Thanks Sheestie for your comment - it is haunting. Such a powerful piece.
Platoon....t h i s music was played during the scene where you see Willem DeFoe left behind by the mean sargent and the troops, surely to be killed. He was raising his arms in desparation knowing he was doomed. That scene and this song has haunted me since. Glad to have run across it here. It's very moving.

Most of the folks posting comments are probably way too young to remember this, but Jackie Kennedy chose this music to be played during the time in which JFK's body was lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda. That's the first time I heard it, and it haunted me for weeks after.
the elephant man, ftw
To Pyrate Pryncess:

The first time I ever heard this music was from the soundtrack to the movie Platoon. So maybe that's where you heard it as well. One thing is for sure, I am so very happy to have discovered it. Its stood up for many, many years as one of my all time favorite themes.
sounds like a "desolate battlefield" kinda song. like the enemy has u on the run and there is no more hope. i cant seem to place where i frist heard this music. beautiful, tho.
troyw91
Wow...that was sad, and beautiful at the same time.
skaboom64
