Rustic Overtones

Rustic Overtones formed in Portland, ME, hometown to each of them. Members of this seven-piece outfit are guitarist and lead vocalist Dave Gutter, drummer Tony McNaboe, trombonist Dave Noyes, baritone saxophonist Jason Ward, bassist Jon Roods, alto saxophonist Ryan Zoidis, and Spencer Albee on keyboards and piano. Roods and Gutter began performing together first, in a family basement. They later added the rest of the group, all friends from high school, and became what is Rustic Overtones. Local gigs earned them a fan base that expanded as the band began to travel, appearing at close to 200 shows some years.

In 1998, the Rustic Overtones released their debut album, Rooms by the Hour, under the Ripchord Records indie label. That same year the group recorded an EP, My Dirt, and two other albums, Long Division and Shish Boom Bam. After leaving Ripchord, the group got the chance to do an album, 2001's Viva Nueva, for Tommy Boy. The Rustic Overtones managed to pull in some special guest artists to appear on this release, like Funkmaster Flex, vocalist Imogen Heap, and one extra special guest, David Bowie.

Following the commercial failure of its major-label album, Rustic Overtones broke up in 2002, after a three-hour farewell show at the State Theater in Portland. On July 27, 2007, the band reunited for another Portland performance, held on the roof of radio station WCYY before 6,000 fans below in Monument Square. The reunion continued with a new album, Light at the End, at first self-issued, but then released nationally by Velour Music Group on March 18, 2008. ~ Charlotte Dillon & William Ruhlmann

The timeline for their album releases is so completely wrong as to be absurd. Just for starters, Rooms By The Hour was NOT released in 1998, nor was it their debut. The actual chronology of their album releases is as follows: Shish Boom Bam - 1994 Long Division - 1995 My Dirt - 1996 Rooms By The Hour - 1997 Check/My Girl - 1997 Volume Up - 1999 This Is Rock & Roll - 2000 Viva Nueva! - 2001 Light At The End - 2007 The New Way Out - 2009 Let's Start A Cult - 2012 Let's Start A Cult Part 2 - 2013

i have been listening to these guys since i was 15, i am 30 now. They are one of the best live bands in the New England area. Granted i am partial to their older stuff because i grew up on it. But they are awesome guys, always willing to hang out with their fans and just chat. :)

If anyone can find the Long Division album Rustic released in the early 90's pick it up. It's absolutley awesome. I bought it in High School and it's still in regular rotation 15 years later.

The name is unique, and not manufactured like most band names these days, do us all a favor Brian and look up the definition of overtone and rustic and then add them together, every name has a deeper meaning behind it. Rustic isn't big because they can't be, Rustic isn't big because they have had piss poor management and fell victim to some unfortunate bad luck breaks with their former record label, things that were out of their control. Listen to the band, and the appreciation will come.

Who cares what there name is in connection to what they sound like, Rustic Overtones ARE one of the greatest bands to hit a music scene of any kind!!!! Just GOOD F'n tunes!!!

Great band with the worst name ever. They aren't folky or rustic, and they're not big on electric stuff like harmonic overtones and ringing electric guitar leads. How about FunkaFried, which is more like what they sound like. Or Lardass Twisters, which is what they become when they make Mainers get up and dance.

I guess I don't understand why s**tty bands like Nickleback, Creed, Good Charlotte make it big and theses guys with all their talent can't make it big! Oh well I guess it makes it cheaper for me to see them.

Dano--thinki n g back to my days at Plymouth State in NH--this was exactly the type of music that we listened to--too bad Thanks to Gravity isn't included on this site. If spate considered for a moment the regional connection he would understand why they ARE similar...da m n those were good times.

wow, dispatch and guster huh. Maybe you should listen to the music more before making stupid comments. Very different from either of those bands. Therefore, you suck.
