actually I think it has a spiritual connotation I believe about his faith in God. He's talking about God's existence.

This song sucks. How it made it to my Vampire Weekend station is beyond me. I thought about leaving it if it had been about the New Orleans Saints, but alas, it is not. LOL. ;)
I agree with Camille. It sounds like the end of a relationship. He's looking to the night sky, pondering love and life. It starts out as a love for the ages (since the fish swam out of the ocean and apes climbed out the trees), but something terrible happened and broke his heart (the stars fell from the sky and tears filled the ocean) and he is afraid of being without his lover. Instead of the beauty of the night sky it's just matter, just black and gold. That is just my interpretation. :)

sounds like a break up song to me... or a keep from breaking up song!

In my opinion The signifigance is the light that lights up the darkness . God is in a way the darkness in the sence that god is an unknown . But the stars serve as a light that not only light the dark but leave the clue of gods existence.HE says as he looks out he feels that weight of something beyond them . Just my opinion though. AWSOME SONG!!
"Black and gold" is explained in the fifth paragraph of the lyrics. He's looking up into the sky and seeing the gold stars surrounded by black space. I don't know what the significance of that is though.

I'd like to know what the phrase "Black and Gold" means - the rest of it makes sense but not that line.
Jesus Christ people can't you just enjoy the song without injecting religion (either way, mind you) into it?
Oops.

NOW, if you're one of those cooky fundamentalists who believe the bible literally and think God created the world in 7 days, and all man evolved from Adam and Eve...you're a moron. That would be incest on a global level, think about it. Read a book.

Even if you believe in God, that doesn't mean evolution didn't happen. It's a FACT. There are skeletal remains and fossils which are indisputable . There are plenty of intelligent people who believe in God and realize evolution did occur under his watchful eye. Evolution is not the abscence of God. It is simply the process in which the world was made.
This song makes me wanna "Feel IT" all night long on the dance floor.... Aowww! I love this song. Sam is so freaking hot, i know im late but Im going to get the album today!
