The Samples

With their relaxed, slightly jazzy pop, the Samples were one of the most popular touring bands of the early '90s. After a bad experience with a major label, the band began releasing their own records independently, building support through a grassroots network of fans. Through constant touring, the Samples were able to keep building their network of fans. They were also busy in the studio, recording three albums between 1992 and 1993. With none of their albums deviating from their folky, Sting-meets-the Grateful Dead pop, their albums -- which include 1994's Autopilot, 1996's Outpost, and 1997's Transmissions from the Sea of Tranquility live set -- are virtually indistinguishable from each other. However, none of them are bad; each record has a couple of first-rate songs, showing why they are concert favorites across the country. Here and Somewhere Else followed in 1998 and Sparta was issued in fall 2000. Return to Earth appeared in 2001, and this studio effort included a guest spot from Boyd Tinsley of the Dave Matthews Band on the track "Great Blue Ocean." The three-disc Anthology in Motion, Vol. 1 arrived in 2002, followed by 2003's Seventeen, a stripped-down live set performed before a thankful crowd at Connecticut's Quinnipiac College. The band returned to the studio for 2004's Black & White and 2005's Rehearsing for Life. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Big Ap 2014. Never got to see the band live but love the music they were never better without Laughlin on keyboards and writing all that good stuff

No other band touched my life as much as these guys, even through all their stylistic changes and band member turnover. Their music accompanied me through the highest highs and lowest lows, and although I'm not able to achieve my dream of having Sean play at my wedding you can rest assured they're on the playlist between sets at our nightclub wedding in SF this Friday night! And yes, Water Under the Bridge was sung at my Mother's memorial (exactly a year ago, October 12th).

I owe a older friend of mine a great debt for introducing me to the Samples. they were broken up by the time i started listening in 2002 a great band that like many others is lost to most people.
Actually the song that plays in 'Perks of being a wallglower' is 'Could it be another change', not this one.

Came across then by accident..if you like, check out Australian indigenous artist The Pigram Brothers, very similar style
I can't count how many samples concerts I went to growing up in the 90 and how much they impacted my life as a teenager. Some of the best memories I have are seeing them at Redrocks. From 90 to 94 were the best times of my life and I have the samples to thank!! Thank you so much guys for having the time of my life!!

Thank you.
WOOLZ!!
from Perks or Being a WallFlower, what a nice movie. This song plays in the very start of the movie
Sean Kelly of The Samples still tours & is still amazing! Its his music and he still can bring it;)

The Samples were WAY before their time. It's so disappointin g they aren't together anymore. I too, remember a young Dave Matthews opening for them back in 1990/91. Much of their music sadly will go on undiscovered by younger folks who need the uplifting, soulful sounds and great vibes Sean and company put so much effort into.
I just discovered this great band from a HORD 'demo only CD I bought at a used CD store a few years ago. Check out Slow moving Crash, awesome song!!

This bio came up for Samples. Not The Samples. Samples = Ben Samples. DJ. Very different artist. Funny.
Seen them in Concert over 30 times over the past 22 years ahhhh what a great refreshing band. To bad they split =( I remember when Dave Matthews band used to open up for The Samples.

best live concert i've ever seen madison, wi 1992

One of my favorite college bands!!

Saw them play in Columbia, MO 4 times. Sean always had a fan blowing his hair as he performed. He can open up a piece with a sustained note better than anyone. Love me some Samples I do.
mark_reyero
The Samples were the soundtrack for my 20s and early 30s. Still one of my favorite bands. What a shame they never received the attention and recognition they truly deserved!

Love music, hate the music business where it is so hard for quality bands like this to make it big because they get no air time from big labels who want to take advantage of them. Love these guys.
barboak
Still luv em and saw some awesome live shows.
stevesmyth30
Another example of quality music appreciated by many, excluding critics. I guess maybe Sean should wear a dress made of meat to get attention. Wait, if they got too much attention it wouldnt feel like they were "my band" anymore.
the samples
I have been going to Sean's and the Samples concerts since the early 90's. Good people without good fortune. Thanks Sean for all the music, tickets, and back stage passes. We are not equal, for my enjoyment of your music hardly seems payment enough.
Been a fan since the Blue album. Ended up in CA years later and got to see them and hang out backstage with Sean and Andy. Good times!
Just saw three members (including Sean Kelley) perform an accoustic set at Herman's Hideaway in Denver on the 26th of March. It was awesome! Been a fan since No Room came out back in 1992 and have never seen them live ... as a Colorado Native I think that's a shame. I really wish I would have seem them play back in the day with the entire band. Maybe someday ...
love this band!
The best concert i went to was in Vail 1993? A little band called Dave Matthews open up for them. I still can not believe I drove home over vail pass that night

Sounds like your personal contact with Sean has tarnished your views on him and the music. how would you know if he drinks or smokes too much? lol maybe he hit on your wife and that is what pissed you off?
rmpirate
The greatest band nobody ever heard of!
ddawson33
I've seen the Samples too many times to count. I love these guys. The one constant that I always loved was Sean's voice. If you get a chance to hear Sean play an acoustic show, do it! His voice is a beautiful instrument to compliment his songs. The 1st time I saw them play was in Boulder of 1988 @ Tallages on the Hill. Too bad Jeep (drummer) stopped playing with them. That guy had CHOPS!
I got to party with these guys once in their bus after their show in Fort Collins. Cool dudes, all of them.
It would be nice to see the description updated to reflect that the band has formally broken up (2008) and Sean Kelley tours as a solo act.

On a personal note, while I thoroughly enjoy Sean Kelley's music, he has fallen too in love with the drink and the dope. Seriously, he sat at my table between sets last fall and took my wife's chair while she was in the bathroom. I was conciliatory and said how my wife enjoyed them for a long time, but he was too busy flirting with an 18-year old.
I remember seeing them at CSU when they played with Big Head Todd and The Freddy Jones Band. A friend got me tickets since the concert was on my birthday. I still have a very ratty, warn tshirt from that concert Feb, of 1994. Still one of my favorite bands to listen to and chill. And when I miss Colorado most, I put their music on.
I remember seeing them at the armory in Greeley colorado around 92

Wow...I thought these guys disappeared. . . m a y b e I disappeared. This sounds great and it would be good for the Samples to do well.
I was sad The Samples broke up in 2007. I want Sean Kelley to still play somewhere in Burlington, Vt.- where his roots began! Laura K
I love his voice and style..

The Samples are one of those bands that was so close to making it huge. After flirting with stardom, they stayed true to their music and never really made it commercially big. However, they had an army of loyal fans and Sean Kelly still plays acoustically all around the country. You really should listen to a few of their classics and try to catch Sean live. Everyone has their own favorites, so I won't even suggest what to listen to. Just explore for yourselves.
You can not say enough about The Samples. I first listened to the group my freshman year in college (1995)and instantly connected with the music. I only regret never having the chance to see them live.
stevesmyth30
What can you say about the Samples? I first "knew" them in Boulder in 92. Still love their music, so sad to see they broke up. Sean Kelly still tours individually with a bunch of Samples songs. If you have a chance, you MUST see them/ Sean live to really appreciate the talent.
