Savatage

Savatage formed in Florida in 1978 as Avatar, led by brothers Jon (vocals) and Criss (guitar) Oliva. They changed their name to Savatage in 1983, pursuing a strongly Judas Priest- and Iron Maiden-influenced style of metal. Their other members included Steve "Doc" Wacholz (drums) and Keith Collins (bass), who was later replaced by Johnny Lee Middleton. They meandered between basic metal and more commercial fare before adding second guitarist Chris Caffery and hitting their stride in 1990 with Gutter Ballet. The band showed a flair for intense, melodic hard rock, dramatic balladry, and elaborate, operatic concepts, which they pursued over their next few albums. Criss Oliva was killed in an auto accident in 1993; he was replaced by former Testament guitarist Alex Skolnick, but the new lineup was ill-received. Dead Winter Dead followed in 1995, and after a three-year absence Savatage returned with The Wake of Magellan. The Final Bell appeared in 2000, and Poets and Madmen followed it in 2001. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

Chriss rocked Brandon Florida in the early eighties with his brother. Together they were hard. Doc pounded those sticks and the Brandon Pub was the place to be. Missed a lot of night shifts at Albertson's because they would be playing. Would not change a thing. Some of the best times head bangging to avatar.

so I've been searching for the album power of the night any leads

Alex Skolnick's appearance with the band was short lived,,he was replaced by Al Petrelli who, along with Jon Olivia and Johnny Lee Middleton, teamed up with producer Paul O'Neil and Robert Kinkle to form Trans Siberian Orchestra. Alex did return to tour with TSO for a couple of years before returning to the thrash band Testament.

R.I.P. Criss Oliva. Best ever!

worst. bio. ever!! savatage rules!!!

Savatage IS and always will be the best. Preast nor any other band will ever compare to these guys. Sad thing is, is that Streets was never mentioned in the bio and was only mentioned by a few on the comment section.

Their song Prelude To Madness from In The Hall Of The Mountain King features an arrangement of Edward Hagerup Griegs Hall Of The Mountain King from Peer Gynt and Mars The Bringer Of War by Gustav Holst's in his suite The Planets.

Definitely need Sirens in catalogue

T.S.O. Savatage base without savatage tso would not be!

Funny how TSO really came from these guys. First time I heard Christmas Eve Sarajevo was on Dead Winter Dead, now it's played every Christmas and falls under TSO, though will always be a Savatage song to me.

Agree jondavis. +1. Horrible Bio

What a shame tso was never mentioned. A lot of people know the history even though a PBS special was selling and promoting TSO as a fund raiser for their Public Broadcasting Savatage was never mentioned even though Jon Olivia was interviewed on the promotion or maybe I missed something. SKITS5150

The bio...who the hell does the research here? Lineup with skolnick ill received? No way you could say that as the entire tour and recordings they did with Alex were pretty much in tribute to Criss. If you ask me that live lineup was actually the best one next to the original. and no way was it ill received. Jag offs.

Blew a speaker back in '89 playing Gutter Ballet for my girlfriend! One of the all time greats.

For me my favorite album is streets
I first heard this band back on 92 when a friend of got this album by error from Columbia music club

I agree, the bio stinks. You'd think they'd mention that Savatage became hugely successful under the name Trans-Siberi a n Orchestra.

Saw them in 88 with Dio and Megadeth

Hey Ihme67nj60, I did the same to that album. That vinyl skips all over the place! Hearing this, Dungeons, Sirens, reminds me of good 'ol times.
