The Sea And Cake

The Sea and Cake are a post-rock supergroup of sorts, comprised of luminaries from the Chicago independent scene. The band is led by singer/guitarist Sam Prekop, who, along with bassist Eric Claridge, was an alumnus of the frequently brilliant Shrimp Boat. After that group's dissolution, Prekop and Claridge were offered the opportunity to embark on a new project and hastily recruited ex-Coctails guitarist Archer Prewitt and Tortoise drummer John McEntire before entering the studio. Originally intended as a one-off project, the musicians decided to continue performing together, and after selecting the name the Sea and Cake -- derived from McEntire's misinterpretation of the Gastr del Sol song "The C in Cake" -- they issued their eponymous 1994 debut, an enigmatic collection highlighting Prekop's stream-of-consciousness wordplay and singular fusion of pop, jazz, blue-eyed soul, and Krautrock styles.

In 1995, the group returned with two more LPs, the intricate Nassau and the shimmering The Biz. After the release of The Fawn in 1997, the band took a break while both Prewitt and Prekop released solo albums. Finally, in 2000, the Sea and Cake released their fifth album, Oui, followed three years later by the delivery of their most elegant album yet, One Bedroom. By this point, the group's repertoire had swelled to include African-inspired riffs, Brazilian influences, and guitar-based indie pop, and they hit a wellspring of creativity as the decade wound to a close. Everybody and Car Alarm were released in quick succession, with Everybody appearing in 2007 and Car Alarm arriving in 2008. An EP, The Moonlight Butterfly, followed in 2011, as did a round of recording sessions for the band's tenth studio album. The results, Runner, appeared in September 2012. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

What kind of a name is that?
Those are the most complete opposite adjectives to describe this, but your entitled to your own opinion. For my the sea and cake opened me to different types of music and really start appreciating music to the point of me starting to play the guitar.
Depressing and monotonous
True alt-rock
I brush my teeth to this s**t

An Echo In is the dopest song of all time.
Super group? Really?
some coool cats they are
@willow, very surprising to see you actually have something positive to say :)
Win!
the Sea and Cake are truly one of the best kept secrets. Archer is a true artist ,as is Sam.
Duh! That's b/c its a cover of a Bowie song.
Nice groove. Sounds a lot like Bowie.
lovely
Good chill out music or for a slow peaceful Saturday morning.
Definitely not boring in my mind. I thought it was quite nice with a relaxing, pleasing sound. Music is not all to be blasting in your face.
something good to kick back and relax to.

Ever.
Best.
I'd like to wallpaper my room with them and touch certain areas when I was in the mood. I wouldn't be threatened to be surrounded by them at all times.
So good!
brilliant

Brian Gahn- one cannot ban bands on pandora. Led Zeppelin would be first for me!

I don't think they suck. I really like 'An Echo In', but 'Jacking the Ball' does get annoying lol.
Meh...I love how people my age are now becoming ad executives.. . p l a c i n g songs like Jacking the Ball into car ads. Hey money is money! These guys are OK, but I had no idea they had so many albums. They deserve a better chance but Pandora always plays this damn car ad, which I heard 6 years ago for the first time.
Sutherjames; Oh really? I really like them.
Bromide always up to his/her idiotic comments. Bravo

Yah never heard of this band but pretty chilled out tunes, groovy
Jeez Wade...don't be such a hater.
i love this group
This is why Pandora is genius. Had never heard of this band or of Sam but am glad I did.
I discovered this band between The Fawn and Oui although the first album I listened to was the self-titled one. Their sound has evolved quite a bit since that album, but I'm niot sure any album can beat "The Biz" although their last two come close. Oui and One Bedroom are good, but to me, those were the purgatory years. Their last two albums, Everybody and Car Alarm, are outstanding albums. For those who enjoy this, check out Sam Prekop's solo stuff.
