November 25, 1856 - June 19, 1915
born in Vladimir-na-Klaz'me, Russia, composed during the Romantic period
Sergei Taneyev (1856-1915) was a Russian composer and pianist of the early 20th century, usually remembered as a student of Tchaikovsky and teacher of Scriabin and Rachmaninov. However, he is increasingly being appreciated for his own music. In his youth, he gained a reputation as a virtuoso and was the soloist for the premiere of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. As an instructor at the Moscow Conservatory, Taneyev had to give up touring, though he returned to it later in life. Of his many compositions, Taneyev's four symphonies and nine string quartets have received much attention. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
Some consider his mastery of counterpoint and polyphony second only to Bach. Not an easy composer to appreciate at first, but his music grows on you and has great depth and beauty.
A poorly recognized composer, Taneyev created great works, a favorite being 'John of Damascus'. Pletnev plays intangibly well, interprets flawless. Fluidity. Gentility. Passion.
