Thomas Newman

October 20, 1955 -
born in Los Angeles, CA, composed during the Contemporary period
A second-generation member of Hollywood's preeminent musical dynasty, composer Thomas Newman carried on his family's legacy through a series of Academy Award-nominated film scores. Born in Los Angeles on October 20, 1955, he was the son of Alfred Newman and the nephew of Lionel and Emil Newman, all three renowned composers and conductors from Hollywood's golden age; Thomas' brother David also followed in the family business, as did their cousin, the sardonic singer/songwriter Randy Newman. Thomas studied piano and violin as a child, following a two-year stay at the University of Southern California by earning a master's degree in music from Yale. Although his early musical theater project Three Mean Fairy Tales was championed by Stephen Sondheim, Newman spent the better part of the part of the late '70s playing keyboards in the rock band the Innocents and the improvisational combo Tokyo 77. In 1983, he broke into the film industry by orchestrating a John Williams cue from Return of the Jedi, composing his first full score, Reckless, the following year. Newman's ethnic-inspired score to the 1985 Madonna vehicle Desperately Seeking Susan proved his breakthrough, and he further honed his distinctive electro-orchestral approach on subsequent projects including 1987's The Lost Boys and Less Than Zero. Films including Fried Green Tomatoes, The Rapture, and Scent of a Woman followed before Newman earned a pair of Oscar nominations in 1994 for his work on The Shawshank Redemption and Little Women; a year later, he received another Academy Award nomination for Unstrung Heroes. 1999's American Beauty was his fourth Oscar bid. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

His songs are bittersweet, peaceful, moving, promising new hope. His talent is raw, genuine, and unparalleled . Loved his score from Finding Nemo!!
I couldn't get into the book. I tried. But I was in 9th grade then, maybe I should try again. But I did like the movie.

i really enjoy his music, it is peaceful but not boring. Wonderfulcom p o s e r
@_blk I wish I had had the opportunity to study music theory to recognize things like diminished triad. Ah well, I'll just enjoy as an audience member.
WHERE IS SOUNDTRACK FROM MEET JOE BLACK I've been asking since 2009.
tomswing
Where's the Wall-E soundtrack?
If a question mark were a song, this would be it. It searches out into the darkness, and what does it find?
can we say diminished triad

I have LOVED Thomas Newman from the moment I first discovered his music. He has such a distinct voice - you can always identify his music - all of which is at once haunting, dreamy, profound and stunning. I'm only sorry he's never won the Oscar. My favorite pandora station is my Thomas Newman station. I never tire of this wonderful music.
You just "know" when Thomas Newman music comes on.. there is almost a passionate "longing" that he captures within his score. I love the piano elements found within the pieces. Like little gems of chewy goodness that tie the larger symphonic sections together. Be prepared to be emotionally moved..

Beautiful!
I like this musical score. My kids and I love the score to the Lemony Snicket movie; never looked to see who did it. Kind of reminds me of Road to Perdition, which I really love. Gonna have to see who did that one too.

His work for Cinderella Man is amazing!!!
The Road To Perdition has one of the best music scores in film. The music so totally sets the mood of the film and the period in which the film is set. The composer Thomas Newman did an excellent job with this films music.

It doesn't get better than "SHAWSHANK" and "BEAUTY", as scores, or as movies, either.
Tip of the hat to Shawshank, for sure

The Shawshank Redemption. Awesome.
American Beauty love it!

If you haven't seen Unstrung Heroes, go watch it now. Absolutely the most whimsical and enjoyable film score I've ever heard. When it comes to execution and compositiona l technique, this is merely good and not stellar like some of his later pieces. But you can tell he put his heart into Unstrung Heroes, let himself play and truly enjoy himself. You can also tell he didn't hold back at all in terms of effort or emotion, and the result is incredible.
So good.

This man has raw emotion in all of his work. Dynamic genius. Captures and evoques the essence of the moment every time.

In his more classical-st y l e moments, Thomas Newman's music sounds very much to me like old Americana. His music has a gentle light touch but is still full and strongly emotional. And his range is amazing as he composes his more contemporary music, drawing on his experiences with rock and other forms of modern music. In all, my all-time favorite composer.

first time i looked up who a composer was - when i was listening to a piece of meet joe black and i had to know who did "whisper of a thrill" --- and of course it was thomas newman; so good
activesociet y
He is legend. I have never been moved more by any other composer.
Truly the best modern American composer of our day and rightly comparable to what Aaron Copeland brought to this art.
duneprod
This guy's my favorite composer. His work has such a unique quality that I can always tell right away that it's a Thomas Newman soundtrack.
