Austrian composer Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871-1942) was Arnold Schonberg's only music teacher and a significant transitional figure between late romantic style and the modern era. His earliest works praised by Brahms, Zemlinsky first enjoyed major success with his opera Es war Einmal (1900); his most celebrated work overall is the Lyric Symphony (1923). Zemlinsky's music gradually became more radical in style, though it evolved a bit behind the work of his most famous student. He was also a prominent opera conductor at the Kroll Opera and elsewhere, but the advent of Nazi Germany forced him out, and he died in the USA. ~ Uncle Dave Lewis , Rovi
