Huh, never ever thought that the "li la li" was anything more than a way of doing a lah-lah-lah thing. Never had a clue that so much conjecture and individual interpretation about it all was going on. Guess I'm not very deep.... :p
The chorus, consisting of a repeated chant of "lie-la-lie". Simon stated that this was due to a lapse on his part:
"I didn't have any words! Then people said it was 'lie' but I didn't really mean that. That it was a lie. But, it's not a failure of songwriting, because people like that and they put enough meaning into it, and the rest of the song has enough power and emotion, I guess, to make it go, so it's all right. But for me, every time I sing that part... , I'm a little embarrassed.
I do some singing and I would guess that the "lie lie lie" part is used just because it is easy to string together vocally in the rhythm of the music. La la la is actually harder to do that way. It also sounds cooler.
This is one of the first songs I learned all the word to. I can still sing it (poorly but with deep feeling) start to finish without missing a word....Love it.
"The Boxer" is classic. Simon's stuff is great, AND his lyrics are right on the money.I don't like all his stuff though - but the hits were outstanding. "Mrs. Robinson" is classic too. AND with Artie's voice added to it they were a pure joy to listen to.
