One of England's leading goth bands of the 1980s, the Sisters of Mercy play a slow, gloomy, ponderous hybrid of metal and psychedelia, often incorporating dance beats; the one constant in the band's career has been deep-voiced singer Andrew Eldritch. (There is some disagreement as to whether the group took its name from an order of Catholic nuns or from the Leonard Cohen song of the same name.) Eldritch originally formed the band in 1980 with guitarist Gary Marx and recorded its first single with a drum machine dubbed Doktor Avalanche. Guitarist Ben Gunn and bassist Craig Adams were added to make live gigs feasible, and the Sisters built a reputation through several singles and EPs. Gunn left the band in 1983 and was replaced by Wayne Hussey. The Sisters of Mercy recorded their first full-length album, First and Last and Always, in 1985, but two years later, internal dissent had split them apart; Marx left to form Ghost Dance, and Adams and Hussey departed shortly thereafter. A legal dispute ensued over the rights to the name Sisters of Mercy; Adams and Hussey attempted to use the name Sisterhood, but Eldritch released an EP under the name to prevent its usage, and the two finally settled on the Mission. Eldritch chiefly utilized a corps of temporary sidemen from this point on (although former Gun Club bassist Patricia Morrison was an official member of the group for a short time) and rebounded with his two biggest-selling American LPs, Floodland and Vision Thing. Despite ceasing studio recordings, Eldritch kept the band active as a performing entity through the first decade of the 2000s and beyond. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
The name definitely comes from Leonard Cohen's song. The title for one of their albums (some girls wander by mistake...) is part of the lyrics from the Cohen song Teachers from the album The Songs of Leonard Cohen, released in 1967.
I first heard SoM in a small record store in Paris in 1987. They were playing the Floodland album loudly, and it was so hypnotic that I had to buy it (the cassette!!) on the spot.
@jsbattista ...Gothic, Darkwave, whatever. That and others like Industrial were all played a lot in the 80s Goth clubs. I tend to classify music into only two genres: Music I Enjoy (like SOM) and Music I Do Not Enjoy. @mombobbie...there is nothing wrong with Floodland, it is a great album.
AE and I had an email thing going back when the Internet was first getting started. We were both on Compuserve . I miss him and hope he is doing well. All the best Andrew. Cheers, Seething Cauldron of Discontent (formerly of Dallas)
Even Eldrich says otherwise and he is known to make fun of the goths in the audience. In House of Blues in Orlando some years back he wore a Startfleet Academy shirt as a way to tell everybody what a bunch of geeks they were.
SOM is basically what it is and nothing more. Sure Eldrich's style of vocals has been taken and used a lot on the "goth" genre, but SOM is not goth nor do they intend to be.
The bio is really not correct. Can someone please fix my favorite bands BIO.

saw them many many times way back in a day when they came through nyc in small clubs...unbelievable..one of the greatest bands ever. They weren't made to live on...they exploded and were gone. if you didn't see them live during their peak, there are many live bootlegs out there..quality isn't the best, but you feel the energy.
I love this band perfect fall n winter music the sisters have been awesome!!!! but yes like jason said they have lost thier energy over the years!!! but i still dig em

Great band, great songs, great albums! Unfortunately I caught the recent tour and wished I had stayed home... bad sound, no energy... a far cry from the lush gothic grandure that's spilling out of my speakers right now.
Almost didn't hear about last year's little mini-tour, but caught them at Toad's in New Haven on US Election night. Eldritch kept checking this little netbook he had on stage, and i thought he couldn't have forgotten the lyrics?!?. Then a short while later he brought it to the front of the stage to show that Obama had just clinched the election and said: "On behalf of the rest of the world... thank you." Very cool.
These guys are phenomenal in concert and the pride of the orginal Goth scence with Bauhaus. I just wished they (Andrew) come out with a new album and frickin' tour again! Oh well...

To mombobbie: Floodland is a fantastic album.
