Sleepytime Gorilla Museum

Performance art, art rock, experimental rock, heavy metal -- all are styles of music that have been used to explain one of the more hard to explain bands in all of rock, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Some critics have compared the band -- which hails from Oakland, California -- to one of the quirkiest bands of all time, Mr. Bungle, and they may have a point (after all, like Bungle, SGM are not opposed to any musical style, and one of their albums was originally released by a label run by an ex-Bungle member, Trey Spruance). Strange costumes, makeup, and instruments that are both traditional and homemade turn out to be some of the key ingredients to Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, who have built a sizable cult following along the way. Comprised of members -- deep breath now -- Matthias Bossi (drums, glockenspiel, xylophone, vocals), Nils Frykdahl (guitar, flute, vocals), Carla Kihlstedt (violin, percussion guitar, autoharp, organ, vocals), Michael Mellender (percussion, assorted melodic instruments, vocals), and Dan Rathbun (bass, piano log, trombone, lute, vocals), SGM originally formed in 1999. Along the way, the group has released several long-players, including 2001's Grand Opening and Closing, 2003's Live, and 2004's Of Natural History. In 2006, the group signed with the End label, which promptly reissued Grand Opening and Closing with additional bonus tracks, and a year later, the group's fourth studio effort overall, 2007's In Glorious Times. Additionally, most of the Sleepytime Gorilla Museum members have also be spotted in other bands past and present -- some of the more interestingly titled ones being Faun Fables, Idiot Flesh, Mute Socialite, Tin Hat, and 2 Foot Yard, among others. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

Really great band. Trying to describe them to people who've never heard of them before is, uh, challenging to say the least.
really reminds me of nurse with wound in a way.
I have all three albums and they all make me question my sanity.
If you want to freak out on a real level... listen to this band on shrooms. Horrifying!! haha
so good. and Nils is actually a really nice friendly guy. Got a chance to meet him and talk a bit after a Faun Fables show.

I LOVE IT!!!!
...and it was good.
"Sanity is a madness put to good uses; waking life is a dream controlled" pretty much sums up this group.
caught them at the NorthEastArt R o c k F e s t i v a l . . . . . t h e y scared half of the audience out of the theater..... b u t those brave enough to stay saw one of best piece of performance art ever! the quickly became my favorite band, because of their daring, their, attention to detail and their incredible musical ideas.
caught them again in Philly at the North Star Bar. wow, the stage could barely hold them. Carla is brilliant... . . c h e c k out her other bands: Tin Hat Trio, Two Foot Yard and solo projects (
fun
I've been lucky enough to see them in hollywood at least 8 times over the last several years and one cannot convey the live show accurately in words or any other way. Video and mp3s don't do it justice at all (when Mo was the found-object percussionis t ) he played the drums using my table and chairs while i was in them and he proceeded around the room playing other things along with a metal keg he rolled around. I got the dopest Sleepytime/S e c t r e t Cheifs 3 Tour poster framed on my wall.
f**king PWNS super hardcore!!!
AMAZING BAND! I was fortunate enough to see them at the Earl in Atlanta. Super nice people as well.
Agreed! The live show is incredible. If you are lucky enough to see them on one of their birthdays even better. I have been 3 times and had to move, hoping they hit Denver again.
seeing them live was the most incredible musical experience i have ever had.
Oh yeah, their shows are outstanding. Super gracious folks too. They're supposed to complete old Idiot Flesh tunes soon just like Kayo dot is doing with Maudlin of the well. I'd love to see that show!
i agree, seeing these guys live was the most amazing thing ever, and it was with secret chiefs 3 to boot. for those of you who don't know, sc3 is mr. bungle w/out mike patton. well now it's mainly trey spruance.
If you get a chance to see this band live, F**KING DO IT!!! If you think you like their music, you need to see their performance. You will appreciate them so much more.

I want to have SGM's baby
Sleepytime is one of the most creative and well-calcula t e d bands I have ever heard. I love how they were influenced by Dadaism and try to convey a sort of organized chaos in their music. It is brilliant. It is influential and very powerful.

Mr. Bungle indeed. Good s**t.
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is music for the new-age/futu r i s t i c intelects of our time. If you dis-like their music than you are a disgusting/w o r t h l e s s cockroach and they are divine!
