Finnish prog metal quartet Sonata Arctica specializes in a soaring, orchestral variation on European heavy metal, fusing the sweeping, romantic bombast of bands like Europe with the over-the-top instrumental chops of Dream Theater. Born in 1996, the band, which included vocalist Tony Kakko, guitarist Jani Liimatainen, drummer Tommy Portimo, keyboardist Mikko Harkin, and bassist Janne Kivilahti, recorded a handful of demos before releasing their first single, "UnOpened," on Spinefarm Records in July of 1999. Producer Mikko Karmila (Children of Bodom, Stratovarius, Nightwish) recorded and mixed Sonata Arctica's full-length debut, Ecliptica, and the album was released in 2000 by Spinefarm and Century Media Records. Following a successful tour with Rhapsody and Stratovarius, the group put out a six-song EP, Successor, which featured live tracks, a pair of covers, and other previously unreleased material. Sonata Arctica were rewarded with various awards and honors around this time: Hard N' Heavy magazine voted them Newcomer of the Year, as did Emma, the Finnish Music Awards. Kivilahti quit the band in late 2000 and was replaced by Marko Paasikoski before work began on the band's second full-length album. With producer Ahti Kortelainen behind the boards, Sonata Arctica recorded Silence at Tico-Tico studios in time for a 2001 release. ~ Andy Hinds, Rovi
I saw um this year (2010) at the House Of Blues in Hollywood, They were the headliner. Great band and a great show. Tony likes to talk to the audience!
Are you tired of the Weeping F**got crying out for attention? Well I have the solution. The key is to "Out-Troll" the Troll. Willow and Moomoo spam about Godsuck, so lets all spam about our favorite bands. Once we have a good fifty people spamming and trolling, Willow will become powerless and fade back into his hole and continue wacking it to Rodsmack posters. Then we can stop OUR trolling and get back to a clean, Willow-free environment. Who's with me?!!!
I'm not too much of a fan of Sonata Arctica, but I just love it when Jani and Mikko get into it with their solo duels. Nothing better than Keyboard against Guitars. And SA is one of the best at it. Second only IMO to Pagan's Mind. They do some great covers too, Helloween, The Scorpions, etc... Also one of the best at that as well. Although once again, their covers can't come close to Dark Moor's version of Mr Crowley. Overall this band for me is good, but not great.
Although, there's something weird I just noticed: Does anyone else think that the first notes of the keyboard intro/chorus of In My Eyes You're A Giant are frighteningly close to Lay All Your Love On Me by ABBA?
Okay, let me first say that I MASSIVELY underestimated it. Even though I do prefer their older work (who doesn't?) the album is amazing!
My personal favorite is Juliet. That song is so wonderfully ironic. Other standout tracks include Breathing (I can really relate to that song right now... *Sigh*), In My Eyes You're A Giant, and No Dream Can Heal A Broken Heart. Zeroes and The Truth Is Out There really grow on you as well.
@Plague: Ha ha, way to 'damn with faint praise'. I still haven't gotten around to checking out the new album to see if it's as disappointing as everyone here suggests.

And of course Deathaura, FITG, and TLAG were great. That goes without saying. :P
The only tracks which disappointed me were Everything Fades To Gray (both versions) and As If The World Wasn't Ending. I still can't like those.
Overall consensus: Fantastic album! Completely worth buying.
I judged it too fast, I guess. You just need to give it a chance.
Okay, let me first say that I MASSIVELY underestimat e d it. Even though I do prefer their older work (who doesn't?) the album is amazing!

(Will continue)
my stations only seem to play their more serious songs.
