Sonata Arctica

Finnish prog metal quartet Sonata Arctica specializes in a soaring, orchestral variation on European heavy metal, fusing the sweeping, romantic bombast of bands like Europe with the over-the-top instrumental chops of Dream Theater. Born in 1996, the band, which included vocalist Tony Kakko, guitarist Jani Liimatainen, drummer Tommy Portimo, keyboardist Mikko Harkin, and bassist Janne Kivilahti, recorded a handful of demos before releasing their first single, "UnOpened," on Spinefarm Records in July of 1999. Producer Mikko Karmila (Children of Bodom, Stratovarius, Nightwish) recorded and mixed Sonata Arctica's full-length debut, Ecliptica, and the album was released in 2000 by Spinefarm and Century Media Records. Following a successful tour with Rhapsody and Stratovarius, the group put out a six-song EP, Successor, which featured live tracks, a pair of covers, and other previously unreleased material. Sonata Arctica were rewarded with various awards and honors around this time: Hard N' Heavy magazine voted them Newcomer of the Year, as did Emma, the Finnish Music Awards. Kivilahti quit the band in late 2000 and was replaced by Marko Paasikoski before work began on the band's second full-length album. With producer Ahti Kortelainen behind the boards, Sonata Arctica recorded Silence at Tico-Tico studios in time for a 2001 release. ~ Andy Hinds, Rovi

I found that animated short/music video on the song Dream Thieves on Newgrounds and have loved them ever since. That was before I turned 17. I'm nearly 24 now. Keep it up guys! I miss Jani though.

The song that got me hooked on them was Full Moon. Amazing band
Definitely one of my favorite bands of all time.

Haha, naturally.
chrisneilbro w n 9

Possibly the most beautiful music I've heard.

The cover for Takatalvi is using a wholly different image than it should be...
I feel like I live in the mansion from Amnesia when I listen to this. I LOVE IT
The most rock & metal stations on Pandora Radio!
Still wrong Takatalvi cover.
kpatti83
gnightwish: being awesome. that's what.

fenrysk, I believe he's talking about the lack of songs about fighting dragons, evil kings or other mystical creatures such as Rhapsody sings about.
it's also funny that natruf comment on the lack of fantasy in their lyrics when they got a bunch of songs about wolves and werewolves
why is the takatalvi album art wrong?
Whats with the scorpions cover ?
my favorite part about the band (after lyrics and the songs) is the lack of fantasy/WoW Lyrics. (compared to most other medal bands
New album is available to pre-order now from Century Media!!
vodka, we need some vodka

Love this song! love Sonata!!!
They don't have my three favs... Silence, Elciptica, and Winterhearts Guild
My boyfriend introduced me to this band and I fell in love with them instantly. Such a great metal band.
I've seen these guys a couple of times... They come to the U.S. with every album! Nice guys too! It's a sing along! :)
It's 'Ecliptica', not 'Eliptica'.
MOAR!
San Sebastian! (just too hot for me!)
Tony Kakko has put out an album with a group called Northern Kings. Tony is not actually part of the band but they are fantastic!
Where is the new album? Great band!
kenjb
I saw um this year (2010) at the House Of Blues in Hollywood, They were the headliner. Great band and a great show. Tony likes to talk to the audience!
where is tallulah??
They were in the US earlier this year, but I missed them.
Sonata Arctica does have fans in US. Shows go pretty well, packed. Usually expensive though when they're with some d-bag headliner like Faggin'force
Hey how about they come to freakin America? Sure, I'm the only one I know who likes them, so what?
hmmm favorite song to date is Deathaura off of their 2010 album Days of Grays
When I first heard Sonata Arctica, I wasn't too impressed. I guess they grew on me. The more I hear them, the more I like them!
@Plague: Been hearing more of them, and I like them better than I thought I would.
@Morgraine: That's one of the better ones off of Unia, in my opinion.
Are you tired of the Weeping F**got crying out for attention? Well I have the solution. The key is to "Out-Troll" the Troll. Willow and Moomoo spam about Godsuck, so lets all spam about our favorite bands. Once we have a good fifty people spamming and trolling, Willow will become powerless and fade back into his hole and continue wacking it to Rodsmack posters. Then we can stop OUR trolling and get back to a clean, Willow-free environment. Who's with me?!!!
"It Won't Fade," is impressive. Not big on Sonata Arctica, typically, but this song's good.
I'm not too much of a fan of Sonata Arctica, but I just love it when Jani and Mikko get into it with their solo duels. Nothing better than Keyboard against Guitars. And SA is one of the best at it. Second only IMO to Pagan's Mind. They do some great covers too, Helloween, The Scorpions, etc... Also one of the best at that as well. Although once again, their covers can't come close to Dark Moor's version of Mr Crowley. Overall this band for me is good, but not great.
@12nights: Yeah, I sent her a bunch of Epica, and she loves them too now.
