Stabbing Westward

Vocalist Christopher Hall and keyboardist Walter Flakus met in 1985 and formed the industrial rock band Stabbing Westward in Chicago. They released an EP in 1990, and recruited guitarist Stuart Zechman, bassist Jim Sellers, and drummer David Suycott. In late 1993, Columbia issued the band's major-label debut, Ungod. Although the album wasn't a success, the group promoted it relentlessly, touring constantly and doing scores of interviews. The groundwork paid off in 1996, when the group released their second album, Wither Blister Burn & Peel. The touring and promotion had built a solid, albeit small fan base which provided the launching pad for the second record's first single, "What Do I Have to Do." The single became a Buzz Clip on MTV, and by the summer, it was a modern rock radio hit that pushed the album to gold status. Stabbing Westward received further exposure that summer when they opened several dates for the reunited Sex Pistols.

Following the success of Wither Blister Burn & Peel, Stabbing Westward spent most of 1997 in seclusion, working on their third album. That record, entitiled Darkest Days, was finally released in April 1998. However, it failed to match the sales figures of its gold-certified predecessor, and Columbia dropped the band in the spring of 2000. A year later, the band inked a deal with Koch Records and issued a self-titled release. Plans for a fifth studio effort were in the works in late 2001, however things abruptly stopped when Stabbing Westward disbanded in February the following year. Material culled from those sessions were likely to turn up on solo efforts from Hall and Kubiszewski. ~ John Bush, Rovi

Anyone who says Darkest Days was terrible likes s**t music.

Darkest Days was the soundtrack to my high school years. And for those who loved the 4th Album, I highly recommend Chris Hall's new band, The Dreaming.
Darkest Days was Terrible!
Saw these guys in concert shortly after their final record. Underrated band. Wither, Blister, Burn and Peel was fantastic as well as as Darkest Days.
Miss this group.

Mesmorizing sound
90's classic club song..Guitar riff grabs you and rocks it to the end ! Rest of there stuff starts wearing on you.
artful_otter
Been listening to Zeromancer lately mostly because they remind me alot of Stabbing Westward.

Love this band even back in high school
I used to love the sound of this guy..He still rocks in my head.. Now this reminds me of Trent Reznor in alot of ways. This is more commercial and has more hooks. Trents new stuff doesnt have many hooks at all. Thats what I appreciate about stabbing westward
I was turned onto these guys after seeing them open up for Killing Joke in the mid 90's. SW is a great band. IDK why Killing Joke is not considered a similar artist.
Stabbing Westward is just like Gravity Kills... Gayer than AIDS. Ran out of skips
The Dreaming is perhaps the most depressing anti-progres s career move ever made. I still listen to Stabbing Westward all the time. Ungod is the s**t... I'm pretty sure Filter stole that bassline.
sarcasticall y , i love how NIN is on top of the 'similar artists' list. at least these guys didnt sound so damn poppy and canned! although its kind of a disappointme n t though that Hall and his new band had to take on that emo look :p

Love this band!
UNGOD is the best album released by these guys!
Right up there with Ministry
This is one of my all time favorite bands

heavy stuff

wither, blister was their best album imo. darkest days was all right, a bit over produced, and ungod was good, but seemed unfinished. they hit the sweet spot with WBB&P.
grinofthecat
If you like The Dreaming you should also look into V.A.S.T if you havnt
I'd have to agree that Darkest Days is their finest work. Ungod is a close second.

I agree with lothster - if you like Stabbing Westward check out The Dreaming. It's great to hear Hall's voice again.
drugs played a huge role in this band's undoing. hall was more than a casual user of heroin and it began to affect his psyche as well as his voice near the end. such a shame too. seemingly infinite possibilitie s flushed for nothing. they broke up after the 106.5 End of Summer Weenie Roast in charlotte.
Darkest days I've always thought was a truly brilliant album. Solid start to finish and in my opinion far better work than Wither blister burn and peel was.
Ungod is really good too.
I think they peaked with Ungod -- great to listen to when you're pissed off.
Andy Kubiszewski - not mentioned in the bio - joined the band as drummer before WBB&P and wrote the songs that ended up being their big hits. My inside tip is that Chris didn't want to sing Andy's songs anymore. He thought the lyrics made him "sound like a loser." Too many egos for one band, I guess, so they broke up angry at each other.
I always thought they were good but never listened to them a lot. Thanks Pandora for reviving interest.
I love the emotion this band shares!! Love for Stabbing Westward.... . b e e n a fan since the early '90s!!!
Waking Up beside You is an awesome song
you HAVE to listen to and support The Dreaming (Chris' new band). Awesome stuff and killer live.
Shame is one kickass song

I love "save yourself"
I discovered these guys in '98 or '99, right after Darkest Days came out- the song "Save Yourself" was a hit on our local Gothic dancefloor and we loved to shout the lyrics as we thrashed. Angry, cathartic and just plain fun music. Pity they only produced a few albums before they fell apart. *is going to have to find their first and last albums- has the two in the middle*
i LIKE THEIR NAME
Dakest days is a truly billiant album and a favorite of mine. It never got the credit it deserved.
these guys were truly creative with their sound and at times pretty unique. first song i heard by them was "Television" . it really would be cool if they put aside they'r differences and reunited. Jim Sellers seems like a cool dude. the dreaming just doesnt seem to reach the roof like SW did. they'r sound is a little more unique in the emo area, but just not as creative and original to tell the truth. i bet if they came back together, they could blow the roof away
If you like Andy Kubiszewski' s music, check out 100 most dangerous jobs on I think it's NBC, the commercials air during the Olympics. :)
You should check out Chris' new band "The Dreaming", they come out here in San Diego alot.
So yeah, I like these guys a lot, but I would hesitate to call them Industrial.
I miss these guys
They were my faveorite band.
it broke my heart when Stabbing Westward broke up. the wife and i saw them several times, the best was with Monster Magnet, and the Cult. I like everything on The Dreaming disc, but it isnt Stabbing Westward. too bad.
Christopher Hall...You'r e my f**king favorite singer/lyric i s t . . . . i feel you man....
Hall is now in The Dreaming. He could do so much better. I saw them and they are so emo. How can he go from Stabbing Westward to some pale, black clad, whiny band called the Dreaming? Come on Chris!
Consider the irony of living in Chicago from '93-'05, and finding this band when I move half-way across the country. I love their sound and wish I would have discovered them sooner.

Great band. "What Do I Have To Do?" is still one of my favorite songs ever. Fantastic industrial from those of us not quite angry enough to always be comfortable with NIN's rage.
I loved this band when they were out...but thier last album got really weepy and weak. Darkest was an awesome album.
