Marvin Gaye represents the consumate artist, tortured though he was by the demons that haunted him. I entitled my listening station in his honor because his album, "What's Going On" is a classic that today remains relevant. And let us not fail to mention the delivery of his live rendention of the "The Star Spangled Banner" that blew every listener's mind. He took that some place no one had ever gone and made what was a patriotic somber song into some exotic ballad from his soulful heart and filled it up with all that he was. Umph, umph, umph! Marvin Gaye! He embodies what all the other artists who are listed here make up: Men/women creating authentic music and expressing it their way. They are not mimicking anyone other than the spirit within and for me that's saying something. I love them all the more for their courage to do so. Marvin Insisted that he be referred to as an "artist" and demanded the respect that accompanies the title. Marvin declared that he was not a slave for hire to reproduce album after album but rather an artist working on works in progress. Artists since the beginning from Louie Armstrong to Ray Charles, to The AACM to Prince/"the artist formerly known as" carry on the fight. So from Marvin to Sun RA to the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. Praise GBM! Music is the language of the soul.
