2.2a)John Digweed Radio

One of a few stations of mine that I've dedicated to a specific artist, I've created this station to highlight the sounds of John Digweed. A master of Progressive House music, John Digweed (along with Sasha) has done more to forward the progressive sound than any other person on the planet, hands down, bar none. His early "Northern Exposure" mix cd's, with Sasha, catapulted electronic dance music into the limelight in the early 90's and made John Digweed a household name for any and every fan of electronic dance music.

The incredible thing about Digweed is that despite his prolific career as a Globetrotting DJ, master producer and record label owner of his own Bedrock imprint, its his production work specifically that has allowed him to carve out a sound that is all his own, and is quite unique, in progressive circles. In a world where so much of the output of progressive artists sounds alike, John Digweed sets himself apart with a unique sound, marked by fat, chunky synths that come at the listener like a blow to the gut.

After releasing several 12"s and being involved in several remix projects, Digweed came to the United States through Orlando, FL and had this to say about it that night, "It wasn’t until 1993, when I did a big party in Orlando, that it kicked things off for Sasha and I. The kids there were really into it, whereas you could have gone to any other state and they wouldn’t have got it."

That party Digweed was speaking of took place at Aahz Nightclub in Orlando, Florida's Beachem Theater, a nightclub that was actually a functioning theater during its normal operating hours. However, at 3:00am on Saturday nights, Aahz would open its doors to the then hugely popular, and extremely underground, Rave scene of the early 90's. Orlando was Florida's epicenter for the burgeoning scene at the time and Aahz nightclub was the undisputed king of that dance culture in the early to mid ninties. No other club in Florida's history can lay hold of the kind of acclaim that Aahz nightclub can. It's resident DJ, Kimball Collins, along with opener Dave Cannalte were a few of the undisputed heavyweights of the early ninties in Central Florida. And while there were other clubs in Orlando at the time that I loved even more than Aahz, (namely The Abyss just down the road) it's Aahz that was most responsible for putting and keeping Florida on the map in regards to underground dance music culture in the early ninties. I consider myself lucky to have been there the night that Aahz hosted John Digweed. Although I was already a fan, and already owned a few of his 12"'s it was that night that I first came to understand what a John Digweed set was all about. I have been a fan ever since. So check out my channel dedicated to one of the true pioneers of electronic dance music, the one and only John Digweed. I hope you'll enjoy listening to his work as much as I have over the years.
