Indie originally meant independent of any affiliation with major record labels. Nowadays, it means that the bands produce everything themselves. Major labels can release and/or distribute their music, but cannot do anything else. Regardless, indie has become a popular underground genre as alternative has become too mainstream. Its most popular characteristic is its unique do-it-yourself style.
