The granddads of the jam band style, the Grateful Dead, are known for their improvisational, free-form sets that went on to influence several generations of musicians. But they weren't alone in combining these jazz techniques with guitar-based rock and roll. In fact, many artists in the 60s, especially psychedelic bands, were known for their improvisation - such as the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, the Allman Brothers and Santana. Since then, the jam band scene has continued to flourish and spawn many sub-genres. Current popular bands include Phish (heirs to the Grateful Dead legacy), Dave Matthews Band, Widespread Panic and the String Cheese Incident.
