Alternative's roots date back to the 70s with the rise of punk and new wave. Alternative would popularize by the 80s and become truly mainstream in the 90s. This was helped by the rise of grunge in the 90s. Unfortunately, many alternative bands entered the pop rock scene, ruining the genre. Indie came along as a descendant of college rock bands like REM, and has replaced alternative as the underground music.
