born in Leipzig, Germany, composed during the Romantic period
Clara Wieck Schumann (1819-1896) was a major female figure among the German Romantics, as a pianist, composer and as muse to both Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Born to a domineering pianist father, Clara Wieck made her debut with him at age 7, but broke with her father in 1840 when she married Robert Schumann, whom she cared for through his later illness and death. Clara Schumann left behind a number of significant compositions, but abandoned composing at the age of 37, concentrating instead on teaching at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, and in presenting extended concert tours which were very popular. ~ Uncle Dave Lewis , Rovi
