Steve Tibbetts

Minneapolis-based contemporary guitarist whose urban-landscape fusion is looked upon as a totally original approach to sound. After a somewhat steady period in the '70s and '80s, Tibbetts started releasing albums irregularly, only offering one in the '90s (Fall of Us All) and another in 2002 (Man About a Horse). ~ Michael G. Nastos, Rovi

Heard the album Yr played in its entirety on KPFT (Pacifica radio in Houston) in maybe 1978. Blew my 15 yr pun intended, I know, its bad) old mind! Called the station to get the name, but didn't ask for spelling--ne v e r found it in a store. Until a year later, my little brother had a $20 gift certificate at an audiophile shop, bought $15 headphones, and there was Yr for $5! Sadly, I played it so many times, I wore it out decades ago... All time favorite!

I would love to find Northern Song on CD at a price that's not ridiculous. Excellent Music. Keeps me occupied during the workday (via Pandora).
Always a pleasure.

Such a Gigantic Musician/Com p o s e r , such a puny bio...
I bought YR after seeing an interview with Steve in Mpls. City Pages. I walked down ceder ave. to the Wax Museum and found it there for 5 bucks. I walked home with it reading the album cover as I went, wondering what to expect. I sat down with my headphones and left earth to travel with Steve. I got out of the chair and walked back to buy all remaining copies to give to friends. we saved a copy to play for special events, after parties, ect...gave my last copy to a guitar instructor
I've been listening to Steve Tibbets & Marc Anderson for many years. My favorite album is Safe Journey. I look forward to his next project.
sacredrhythm
very possibly one of my most played and most favorite songs ever.

WOW..I just discovered Steve Tibbets....k e e p s you guessing!!
I thought I had left some grateful testimony before, not that it is in the slightest bit needed or worth the space it occupies. Read on... Never mind. Some of the individual album reviews do a nice job, e.g. that of Exploded View, and it would be nice if some of that could be distilled here for the main bio.
Been a fan since '77. nuf said.
all i can add to the excellent, perceptive commentary below is that you're ALL right - this man is every bit that complex+wond e r f u l ! his music, and his approach to composing, is absolutely unique, and i consider him something of a national treasure!
Steve Tibbetts is one of the most original and spiritual artists I have ever heard. I spoke with him briefly when I was doing some underground radio in Memphis and he seemed a very humble, modest man who probably thought I was nuts when I realized who he was and went on and on about how truly musical I thought he was...is. I even got an autographed copy of Yr before he signed with ECM. This man offers so very much to the listener. A true musical artist! Absolutely brilliant!
I love this! Incredible talent with musical adhd........ . . . w i t h i n 20 seconds you go from a sonorous desert to a mosh pit, a Tibetan temple, outer space, frozen tundra, and all with amazing drumming and breathtaking chords!
this is the first time in memory that i am hearing any steve tibbets good stuff!!!

This guy deserves a better bio.
When the 1st album came out in '76 I was also listening to Eno, Bowie, Gentle Giant, Genesis, Yes, Nano Vasconcelos, Jan Garbarek.... . . F r i p p , King Crimson....S t i l l fresh and tonally unique.

bloody good.
THANKS PANDORA.
Beings weather. Weather weathers. Steve is a pleasure, grinding with the weather to be with itself (sic, myself; you drunk?), and idiots to enjoy (repeat sic).

I love this guy's stuff. I've been listening since the mid-80s and ended up buying everything but one, his duo with the nun. Now that I'm painting regularly, he is always in rotation in my player and my radio station here is all Tibbetts all the time. Easily, the best music to paint to that I own.

Unfortunate, but I think Yr is Steve Tibbetts' magnum opus. Nothing he's done since (1980) compares. Every cut on the album is excellent. I keep looking and hoping for more similar work, but he seems to have gone off on some pretty weird journeys. Some cuts on some albums are absolutely wonderful (e.g. Drawing Down the Moon from Exploded View), but too many of the more recent stuff has way too much noise to suit my taste.

I have never heard of his music until now thank you Pandora! you guys are outa sight with all of this great music I'm totally blown!

"Formless" from 1994's "The Fall of Us All" is one of my faves!
Agreed, Ur is seriously just phenomenal

"Ur" just blows my mind to infinity. How can anyone play this good and be so original? I checked some of his stuff on youtube; was not too excited about his adventures and experiments with chineses music, etc (although I understand that many musical experiments that end up going nowhere, are needed before one masterpiece can be made). I still cling to more western influence with arabic elements. But japanese and chinese melodies largely irritate me.
the more adventurous among us might enjoy tibbetts' collaboratio n s with tibetan buddhist nun choying drolma. also, as much as I love steve tibbetts' music, credit should be given to percussionis t marc anderson, who seems to be always there.
How have I not been aware of this guy before now? I really need to leave the house more often.
Steve Tibbetts is aurally luminescient . I've listened to him since the 70's and he is always fresh and profound. Mindfullness incarnate!
Steve Tibbetts is incredible. I was first introduced to him by a copy of Safe Journey that my dad had on vinyl. I've tracked down more of his recordings over the years, and found him to be one of my all time favorite guitar players.
His early album's YR and Safe Journey are especially great, but all of his later work is fantastic too.
What a unique guitarist. I can not believe I had never heard of him before Pandora. I love his music and guitar style. Steve is quickly climbing the ranks of my favorite guitarists.
