Storyville

Veterans from dozens of jam sessions and all-star backing bands, the members of Storyville gelled at just such a jam, in 1994 at the Austin club known as Antone's. Bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton had played in Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble for ten years before the bluesman's death in 1990, and both moved on to the Arc Angels before meeting the other members of Storyville. Lead guitarist David Holt played on the Mavericks' debut album, and appeared with another lead guitarist David Grissom in Joe Ely's backing band. Grissom would also gain experience touring with John Mellencamp and the Allman Brothers. The only member of the band with less than ten sideman credits, vocalist Malford Milligan, sang with the Austin band Stick People before the formation of Storyville -- named, of course, in honor of New Orleans' historic red-light district.

After several sessions to work out their bluesy soul/R&B, Storyville hopped into the recording studio and produced an album for November Records. Released the same year of the band's foundation, The Bluest Eyes won the band six awards at the 1995 Austin Music Awards, including Best Band and Best Single. The LP was rated highly in mainstream publications, and earned Storyville a major-label contract, with the Atlantic subsidiary Code Blue. Though the band released no new material during 1995, three more trophies at that year's Austin Music Awards were forthcoming. Second album A Piece of Your Soul was released in 1996, followed in 1998 by Dog Years. ~ John Bush, Rovi

Thanks Pandora, for reminded me off all my favorite music from my youth that I just kind of forgot about from being so busy with life. You make it so easy and a very happy and pleasant experience to be able to listen to a personalized radio station that moves my heart and soul. This is the new kind of radio. By the way, I love Storyville. What an amazing compilation of great blues/rock musicians. I remember Austin...199 0 ' s - 2000 - Best Years!...tha n k s to the organic music it provided.
Didnt know these guys all played together in this band - awesome - immediately added them to my station
Oh, God, how I love these guys.
First time I heard these guys, I got chills. Been listening ever since.
Storyville and Arc Angels are two of the best bands that EVER were!!!
One of my favs. Loves me some Storyville.. .
great band saw them twice live and was always impressed by the songs, musicianship and how cool they were after the show.Storyvi l l e and all its members were fantastic!

Doesnt get any better than this!
blues will never be outdated...k e e p shreddin.
great in every way
Malford gives it all in EVERY performance! ! It's unfortunate that they have not played together since, I believe, 2000. From Austin, there was no chemistry I have ever seen like this band had together! Malford still performs at Antone's - Seen him perform with Lisa Tingle, and John Lockhart. Great soulful lyrics with tons of real emotion... miss them!
Can I give these guys anything bigger than a thumbs-up?
Great song writing and playing, doesn't matter what year, that is what you call timeless music. I just discovered them. And to those of you that want to leave negative comments... just don't man. It's immature and tacky at best. I'm just sorry I missed them in their day....

Malford is absolutely the BEST! Wife and I have been traveling to see him sing for years. Caught him many times at Railroad Blues in Alpine, Tx. Wish Storyville would do another reunion gig.
This style was cool in the 80's........ . . . . . . . I t ' s now 2011 and it's really out dated. lol !! That's some of the funniest crap I've read in a long time!
Yeah, I totally agree with E.R.Delaney and disagree with betitio58!!! These guys are GREAT!! Got to see them at Antones last year and WOW!!!!!!!!
I agree with E.R., whats missing betitio a cookie monster style singer with some rap rock ? I think not. Great stuff...
bluesindulut h
John Mellencamp was never cool.In my opinion his songwriting, vocals, the sound of his band...somet h i n g is just missing, like soul. He is at best nominal...an d was competely overplayed.

"Out of date"??? Are you kidding? These guys are classics; tasty, balanced, melodic, rich... Arc Angels and Storyville are two of my MOST favorite bands. Dude, get some ear training...
This style was cool in the 80's ala John Mellencamp. It's now 2011 and it's really out dated.
Actually David Grissom is a native of the state of Kentucky, but he was smart enough to get to Texas as quick as he could. Then of course he helped further define the sound. What a great guitar player.

Austin was really awesome 10 to 15 years ago. It's still pretty great.

This is what I miss about Austin, TX!!! Lived there for 10 years...Don' t miss the heat but REALLY MISS THE MUSIC!
Its Blues baby, nuf said.

Each time I hear this band I love them. What Passes For Love is killer stuff. I have yet to meet a blues fan who doesn't like this band. More please, fellas

Dave.......w h a t the hell does that have to do with what crash is saying? Stay on topic!!!
I don't think you understand the intent of the robbie robertson native american artist movement. read my station details and research robbie's intent to have native american artists have their own distinction. .
Oh, Mr. Bush, you can check my station pages if you need some info for further research...
What is this reviewer talking about? "Rhythm guitar player" David Grissom? David Grissom is one hell of a rhythm player, yes, but that's DG playing some of that lead there Mr Bush. No disrespect to David Holt, who is also a great player, but I am a staunch Grissom fan. Can't put up with reviewers who don't research what they're writing about.
Wow, how'd I miss these guys? Shannon & Layton should've been a dead giveaway, but I guess they just fly under the radar for blues junkies like me who pay more attention to superstar axemen than the whole blues *sound*. :)
