Studebaker John & The Hawks

Taking his stage name from an automobile he once owned, Studebaker John Grimaldi was a product of the vibrant blues scene of Chicago's West Side. Born November 5, 1952, his father was himself an amateur musician, and as a youngster, Grimaldi began playing the many instruments lying about the house. Becoming a fixture at the open-air flea markets in the Maxwell Street area -- a venue for countless blues buskers -- he began focusing on harmonica after catching performances from the likes of Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson; after taking in a Hound Dog Taylor club date, Grimaldi also turned to guitar. He formed the blues-rock band the Hawks during the early '70s as a showcase for his reedy vocals, primal harp sound, and blistering slide guitar skills, and in the years to follow also developed into a fine songwriter. While keeping his day job as a construction worker, Grimaldi began recording during the mid-'80s, issuing a live Netherlands set later re-released domestically as Rockin' the Blues '85. His next major release was 1994's Too Tough, followed in 1995 by Outside Lookin' In. He maintained a prolific recording schedule in the years to come, issuing Tremoluxe in 1996 and Time Will Tell in 1997. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Tell me why? Love this song.
My dad used to play in this band in the 80-90's, Ron "spin daddy" Regnas on the bass. Can't believe I can have them on pandora
Studebaker John and the Hawks used to play a previously Great club "Checkers" on far South side Cedar Rapids, Iowa and always throw down solid dynamic and soulful Blues w/Harp & slide Guitar!! He mentioned the late great JOHN , a regular busker @ the Chicago markets, as an early influence on his direction in Blues!! Just a note...John is a kind and generous mentor with his precious time and is as real deal as it gets!! Nowadays I catch him @ The Muddy Waters Club in , Bettendorf Iowa...or of cou
Nothing but FUNNN
I see Studebaker when ever he's in Ct Awesome !
Saw him at Moondog's in Pittsburgh a year or two ago. It was a rowdy and rockin' show!

He must have known and/or played with Paul Butterfield. . . h e ' s that good!
blus harp is very special, and very much a part of American culture, like blues itself. When I was living in Switzerland, it is Jazz/Blues that they want in places like Montruex. not Taylor Swift etc. etc.
One of my favorites!
wow! Never heard of him, but i like it... a lot!

Dude used to rock out the old Change of Pace at THE Western Illinois University back in the late 80's too!
I saw Studebaker John in a little pub in the tiny village of Hook in Wiltshire UK. There could only have been about 50 people in there - brilliant, a night to remember.
Caught this dude playing backup band to Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown approx 2-3 years before Gatemouth passed. Absolutely Phenomenal. A definite must see!
I will need to look for this guy. Awesome rhythm and beat. I will look for his shows in the future.
I LIVED in Chicago in the early '90's (Belmont, Clark and Halsted intersection ) and I never heard of this guy until a minute ago on here. I can't believe I missed out on this guy! I traveled a lot so maybe I just missed it but geez, what a great show this must have been!
Used to see Studebaker John play in Chicago blues clubs in the early 90s. Life was good then!
