Sugarhill Gang

Though the Sugarhill Gang inaugurated the history of recorded hip-hop with their single "Rapper's Delight," a multi-platinum-seller and radio hit in 1979, the group was cooked up to cash in on a supposed novelty item. Music industry producer and label owner Sylvia Robinson had become aware of the massive hip-hop block parties occurring around the New York area during the late '70s, so she gathered three local rappers (Master Gee, Wonder Mike, and Big Bank Hank) to record a single. Infectious and catchy, "Rapper's Delight" borrowed the break from Chic's "Good Times" and became a worldwide hit, eventually selling more than eight million copies. Most industry people figured rap for a short-lived trend, and though they were dead wrong, the Sugarhill Gang certainly didn't carry the torch; despite several modest hits ("8th Wonder," "Apache"), the trio faded quickly and was gone by the mid-'80s, only returning in 1999 with Jump on It, a rap album for children. ~ John Bush, Rovi

29 y/o now first heard it at like 14 or 15 on the original vinyl. I am now in possession of the solid state turntable that I heard it on of my late nanas all those years ago. Still in search of the vinyl so I can hear rappers delight the way it was meant to be heard and to me it sounds the best in vinyl.

I was 11 when this song came out. I believe I was the only kid alive that did not go crazy over it. I was like Why are these guys talking over 'Good Times'. That doesn't take any talent.. I appreciate the song and decent hip-hop now more at 47 years old than I did back then, now that I have surrendered to the fact of sampling. Though I despise most hip-hop, because I still see most of it as a plot to aid in the destruction of the black community. Just my two cents.

This was universal rap at its finest. All races, religions, sexes and ages can recite at least one verse of this song to this day. It wasn't raunchy, wasn't a political statement and is timeless.
