Swervedriver

The band who brought the car song into the shoegaze era, Swervedriver were formed in Britain in 1990 by vocalists/guitarists Adam Franklin and Jimmy Hartridge, bassist Adi Vines, and drummer Graham Bonner. Fusing the swirling textures of the shoegazer aesthetic with the more traditional boundaries of pop, the group debuted with a series of brilliant EPs -- Son of Mustang Ford, Rave Down, and Sandblasted -- before issuing their full-length debut, Raise, in 1991. After a U.S. tour in support of Soundgarden, Bonner left the band, followed quickly by the departure of Vines; 1992's Never Lose That Feeling EP, their strongest effort to date, initially appeared to mark the group's swan song. But in 1993, Swervedriver returned; with the core of Franklin and Hartridge rounded out by new drummer Jez Hindmarsh, they released their sophomore LP, Mezcal Head. An import-only release, Ejector Seat Reservation, followed in 1995, and featured new bassist Steve George. In the fall of 1998, Swervedriver resurfaced with their fourth effort, 99th Dream, and the Wrong Treats EP followed in 1999. Bonner and Vines, meanwhile, continued as Skyscraper, and Adam Franklin recorded as Toshack Highway. Swervedriver were on hiatus for much of the 2000s, until an October 2007 announcement that the group would re-form and commence touring the following year. The next several years found Swervedriver -- Franklin, Hartridge, and George, with Hindmarsh, Bonner, or, starting in 2012, newcomer Mikey Jones (Bolts of Melody, Heaven) on drums -- sporadically touring and appearing at festivals internationally, as well as making an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The new single "Deep Wound" was released in the fall of 2013, and the group also announced plans for the arrival of a new full-length album in 2014. The album, titled I Wasn't Born to Lose You, eventually got pushed back to a release date of early March 2015 and was preceded by second single "Setting Sun." The album would be Swervedriver's fifth full-length studio long-player and the band's first since 1998's 99th Dream. ~ Jason Ankeny

Deep seat and rave down would stop everyone at my house in their tracks to sing a few lines

Not enough great things said about this band! Original sound, interesting lyrics (Last Train to Satansville) , phenomenal guitar. Raise and Mezcalhead are fantastic!

WTF is Shoegaze ? It is some stupid new genre of crappy music by no talent hacks ? This band certainly qualifies.

RAISE - one of the best under the radar albums ever made. No doubt.

Saw them open up for Smashing Pumpkins in 1993. To this day the greatest concert I've ever seen.

Always awesome, probably the most underrated band EVER! Saw them in NYC 3/31/12, still awesome.

Loved them since Raise. Just saw them for the first time in D.C. on 30 March. One of the best live bands I've seen - technically. They lack a bit in stage presence. But the sound they get out of those four pieces is bonecrunchin g incredible.

Raise is for sure one of my favorite albums of all times, it never gets old and always intantly takes me back to where i was in the early 90's, doing drugs, roadtrips to the beach, not worrying about s**t. They're other albums are great too. Saw them twice, once back in the day in a small club in Baltimore, and at the reunion tour in DC a couple years back. Hope to see them again before i die.

Great band, it's a shame that Pandora's selected discography lists the Juggernaut Rides and omits Raise and MezcalHead.

Saw them in SF...was one of the best shows I have ever seen....hopi n g to soon have another US tour, they rival PJ in greatest bands of the last 20 yrs..

First concert I ever saw was Monster Magnet, Swervedriver , Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden at the Civic Center in Austin, TX circa 1992. Life-changin g . . . a n d the only band I still, to this day, listen to is Swervedriver . To see them take the stage at the Henry Fonda in Hollywood in 2008, and have the memories their songs are attached to from the past 16 years come sweeping back was epic. I smiled for days...

We used to drive the backroads of north Texas with nothing better to do, drinking beers and smoking joints rocking out to Mezcal Head - "girl on a motorbike" was always a favorite, and so was "duress".

One of the most underrated bands of the 90s. 'Raise' is the second CD I ever bought. So glad I still have it because it would be near impossible to find it in the states these days.

Came through Denver last year and I missed them. They played a tiny empty venue and I'm still depressed about not going. Mezcal Head is truley a great album...

Shamefully under-apprec i a t e d (in the states anyway), I loved them when I first saw 'Raise Down' on 120 min back in the old days. Mezcal Head is their masterpiece in my opinion. Saw them open for Monster Magnet(!) and Soundgarden, an unlikely line-up but they were really great (and loud). Recently, they played in Portland and of course they were as tight as ever, as if they were never on hiatus. Its too bad most of their albums are long out of print.

I used to live in a terrible crack house/straig h t from prison shared apartment in SF. One of the few guys I liked there introduced me to Swerevedrive r . He was pretty excellent for a skid row bottom of the barrel house no place left to go roomie. HERE'S TO YOU SEAN!
