Symphony X

Michael Romeo formed Symphony X in New Jersey in 1994. The original lineup of the group also included Thomas Miller (bass guitar), Rod Tyler (vocals), Jason Rullo (drums), and Michael Pinnella (keyboards). They released their self-titled debut late that same year. The next year they put out the follow-up The Damnation Game. 1995 also saw Tyler leave the group, his replacement coming in the personage of Russell Allen. Their next release came out in 1997. It was the critically acclaimed The Divine Wings of Tragedy. In addition to the critical praise, this disc became the group's biggest commercial success yet. Before recording their next album, Jason Rullo left the band. He was replaced by Thomas Walling. With this lineup, the group released Twilight in Olympus. This release garnered both greater critical kudos and greater sales. In a unique turn of events, however, the band faced a new lineup change. Newcomer Walling and bassman Thomas Miller both decided that they were not up to touring for the album. The recently departed Rullo rethought his exodus and came back into the Symphony X fold. Andy DeLuca was brought in on bass for the duration of the tour. After the tour was over, the group found a permanent replacement in Mike LePond. This formation of the group released their fifth album in 2000 with V: The New Mythology Suite. The following year, Symphony X released their first live album, Live on the Edge of Forever, which captured performances from their 2000 European tour. In 2002, the band continued to mine mythology with their sixth studio album, The Odyssey, which was based on Homer's epic of the same name. The band took a bit of a break while its members released solo albums, but came together again in 2007 with the relased of Paradise Lost, a concept album based on Milton's tale. Taking a break from mining the past, the band looked to the future for the theme of their next album. The result was 2011's Iconoclast, which featured a darker tone and a cautionary story about machines taking over the world. ~ Gary Hill, Rovi

Despite the Iced Earth-esque revolving door of lineup changes, Symphony X is one of the most amazing bands this genre has to offer. I put them right up there with the very best European bands.
Symphony X is an awesome band, with Iconoclast proving, once and for all, that they are better than Dream Theater.
Picked up Iconoclast recently and must say, it's one hell of an album. Electric Messiah deserves to see mainstream rock/metal radio play. Maybe it already does - idk - the only radio I listen to is Pandora :P
I saw them this past weekend as well, and they were unbelievable .

Saw them this past weekend, these guys put on a hell of a live show. Definitely see them if you get a chance. Was not even a huge fan, but that live show was great stuff. Im a convert now

Maximum Prog/Metal, & Hard Rock. 24/7. Feed your head @
BudRollsRadi O .
I love that Russell Allen at times sounds like Steve Walsh of Kansas and other times sounds like the late Ronnie James Dio and yet still has his own indentifiabl e voice. Truly a remarkable singer.

One of the few drummers who can actually stand toe to toe with Mike Portnoy is Jason Rullo. Guy rocks. Also, if you love great drummers, check out Bobby Jarzombek (RIOT, Halford), Simon Phillips (Toto, Michael Schenker, many others), Rod Morgestein (Jordan Ruddes, Dixie Dreggs, etc.). An my favorite Steve Smith (Tony Macalpine, Vinnie Moore, Buddy Rich tribute, Vital Information, Journey, GHS, Vital Tech Tones, etc.).

A Metal band from my home state? Hell yes.
thanks Pandora! \M/
i love theme based albums. 3 inches of blood is a fond metal band of mine that tells epic tales in all of their songs similar to this band
Iconoclast added!!
For real Andrew I want Iconoclast up here!
I wish pandora had their first two albums as well.
Iconoclast is awesome! Can't wait for Pandora to upload it.

If you like SX check out Kansas.
Good SHI@
They are phenominal-- a n d the Paradise Lost album is simply brilliant.
I don't like them very much, but I can't pinpoint why.
hey lump, be careful. it sounds like you may actually believe that fodder. talk about generalizing . meet each human you encounter with an open mind and a cheerful manner. it will serve you well. see you on the other side, friend, jjs

I saw Dream Theater, Symphony X and Megadeth in AC a couple of years ago.
mmesko6
I agree with you Ben. However you forgot Dream Theater. But I agree with your assesment about Europe and Brazil, Angra, Ayreon to name a few.
That because most American music doesn't focus on talent but rather a pop hook that sells. It's all about makin money. Not only that fact, but younger kids in Europe are generally more educated in music than Americans. Remember your music class in high school/grade school? Of course you don't. Children learn theory in europe while kids are learing how to count beats in America. Musical talent/educa t i o n just isnt part of American curriculum. in fact, kids are labeled as band geeks here.
coreen618
First time ! not bad..
@ben tish still Khan is from Norway... but ur right, Kamelot and Symphony X the only good American bands, the rest is all european
i love the artest
ahaller19
Outstanding music
bocult
Symphony x and Kamelot are about the only American bands I listen to these days. It seems like all the best bands are from Europe or Brazil.
WOW!
Why didn't I play in a band???
kenjb
Looking forward to the new album, then they're touring in the US! I saw them both times they toured the US supporting Paradise Lost.
Paradise Lost = best album hands down. All of their albums are great but that one blows them all out of the water. The instrumental s are INSANE and the story behind it is great too. I love concept albums.
Great Band, and they just released USA tour dates! W00T!
They are a great live metal band. CD's are great but seeing them live is justice. Thank you SX!!!!!!!!!

Listening to Evolution (The Grand Design) by Symphony X. First I ever heard of this band. To me, it sounds like both vintage Helloween and Fates Warning (both of which I love by the way).
I love this group as much as I love Dream Theater, and admire Jason Rullo as much as Mike Portnoy!! Great band, one of my top five!
love them great musician...
Technically, since there is no year zero in the Christian calendar, wouldn't the year 2000 still be part of the 20th century? Therefore, silkystreebz z 7 , V could be Symphony X's greatest album AND Paradise Lost could be the be the best metal album of the 21st century at the same time.
silkystreebz z 7
Not to argue with you Watson, but I think V was Symphony x's greatest album. But Paradise lost is insane.
I am a huge fan of progressive, symphonic, and power metal and Symphony X never gets old. The sound of the guitars and the bass with the amazing drums takes me to metal heaven! My all time favorite song, The Odyssey! 23 minute epic!
saw Symphony x live in Chi town a few years ago and then again at Pop's in St Louis. they freaking rock!! Dream Theater and these guys are the reason i love music!
Well I am a huge Dream Theater fan so I was bound to end up running into these guys at some point. Glad I did, they rock!
Paradise Lost is the best metal album of the 21st century, hands down!
I agree brocksweeney about your comment. SX are better LIVE! I had the opportunity to see them last summer 'House of Blues' SD, Ca. GREAT SHOW! Where is the PIT........
Everything about this band is incredible. I especially have a unique fondness for the singer. Most prog-metal singers tend to sound a little strained and are often teetering on the edge of going sharp or flat. This man has a gift, however. Being a singer myself, I often cry myself to sleep at night wishing that my throat could produce even half of the beauty of Russell Allen's. This, and their unrelenting creativity, sets them apart from other bands in their genre.
johncsilvi
Never heard of these guys, but really like their music very progressive like Genesis and Yes and Pink Floyd but uniquely their own !
livinfree66
Wow , never heard of this band ( symphony X ) if you like dream theater you will really like this group.
Are you tired of the Weeping F**got crying out for attention? Well I have the solution. The key is to "Out-Troll" the Troll. Willow and Moomoo spam about Godsuck, so lets all spam about our favorite bands. Once we have a good fifty people spamming and trolling, Willow will become powerless and fade back into his hole and continue wacking it to Rodsmack posters. Then we can stop OUR trolling and get back to a clean, Willow-free environment. Who's with me?!!!
