Symphony X

Michael Romeo formed Symphony X in New Jersey in 1994. The original lineup of the group also included Thomas Miller (bass guitar), Rod Tyler (vocals), Jason Rullo (drums), and Michael Pinnella (keyboards). They released their self-titled debut late that same year. The next year they put out the follow-up The Damnation Game. 1995 also saw Tyler leave the group, his replacement coming in the personage of Russell Allen. Their next release came out in 1997. It was the critically acclaimed The Divine Wings of Tragedy. In addition to the critical praise, this disc became the group's biggest commercial success yet. Before recording their next album, Jason Rullo left the band. He was replaced by Thomas Walling. With this lineup, the group released Twilight in Olympus. This release garnered both greater critical kudos and greater sales. In a unique turn of events, however, the band faced a new lineup change. Newcomer Walling and bassman Thomas Miller both decided that they were not up to touring for the album. The recently departed Rullo rethought his exodus and came back into the Symphony X fold. Andy DeLuca was brought in on bass for the duration of the tour. After the tour was over, the group found a permanent replacement in Mike LePond. This formation of the group released their fifth album in 2000 with V: The New Mythology Suite. The following year, Symphony X released their first live album, Live on the Edge of Forever, which captured performances from their 2000 European tour. In 2002, the band continued to mine mythology with their sixth studio album, The Odyssey, which was based on Homer's epic of the same name. The band took a bit of a break while its members released solo albums, but came together again in 2007 with the relased of Paradise Lost, a concept album based on Milton's tale. Taking a break from mining the past, the band looked to the future for the theme of their next album. The result was 2011's Iconoclast, which featured a darker tone and a cautionary story about machines taking over the world. ~ Gary Hill, Rovi

One of the best metal bands from here in the U.S..
mrbenedict24
i love the combination of symphony and guitar, like S&M, Symphony X, Epica, and a lot of others
Music is good the singer not so much.
This is the first time of me hearing this group there pretty good. Them jersey boys know how to rock the house.
Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of you life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you've started reading so don't stop. This is so scary put this on at least 5 songs in 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lover's name will come on the screen in big letters. This is so scary because it actually works
I saw SX a whlle back at HOB San Diego...outs t a n d i n g show! Kick a** drummer...th a n k you SX for coming back to SD!
Love!!

Saw them open for blind guardian in Chicago at the metro about 8 years ago need I say more
The most rock & metal stations on Pandora Radio!
this is awesome there from mew jersey XD lol
i believe oculus ex inferni mean "eye out of the flames" or something like that
Epic.
choose_freew i l l
*smile* So glad I discovered them on Gigantour; Allen is one of my favorite vocalists
thank god for Michael romeo. damn.
They have been both. They started out as neoclassical , then became more symphonic around the time Lepond joined. Nowadays, they mostly play straight-up progressive metal.
So what is symphony X? Are they prog metal or symphonic metal?
it docent get any better than this
this is really good
I agree
Hey !!! Why argue which is best ? Dream Theater is superb !!! Symphony X is superb !!! There is certainly room in my collection for both of these astounding collections of talent.
nightranger, you mentioned Adrenaline Mob.... I saw them in Richmond,Va 2 weeks ago. got pics and signatures.. . . They kicked total (__!__) !! the band consisted of Russell Allen (symphony X) John moyer(distur b e d ) Mike Portnoy (dream Theater) and Mike Orlando(solo , but tours with portnoy) very nice guys!!! definitely something to listen to!!
i saw symphony X in dallas tx at a place called trees in 2012. i was 11. im alomst 12. i can shred alot of DT and symphony x on guitar. these guys r f**king legendary
undercacopho n y h i l l
changes like Dream Theater - best thing going for em
lonewolf36
Why are these guys not major superstars? So good..
lonewolf36
This is some tasty sh*t here ..kinda a throw-back to old Kansas and Yes..love!
If you like Symphony X, give Adrenaline mob a listen. Russell Allen on vocals, and Mike portnoy in drums.
You can tell Symphony X is well read in classic literature, hence the epic lyrics.
agreed...DT is top of the food chain. i do love this band too as well.
best band in the world = dream theater. i greatly appreciate symphony x though =3.

Best music heard in a long time.
Symphony X rules, even Dream Theater does not approch them. Perfect balance between Metal and Prog.
@osmium I happened to like A Dramatic Turn. There was a new groove that I could hear that I couldn't in the past few heavy albums, now that we have a Mangini swing and Portnoy wasn't drowning the bass a bit. I still love Iconoclast quite a lot.
ron.eaglin
Could probably name 20 bands you will never hear on radio that are much better musically than anything you will hear on radio. Cest La Vie
wramirez04
One of several bands I discoverd while listening to Pandora...wh y can't radio play this stuff!?! Just when I thought it couldn't get better, I saw them live!!! They where bad a**!!!
RUSSELL ALLEN RULES
Depends on what you mean by better. Symphony X's last album was definitely better than the relatively flat one Dream Theater put out. Iconoclast was quite awesome; whereas to me a Dramatic Turn of Events wasn't nearly as moving; it seemed to me to be a step back to their roots... whereas I was much happier with Octavarium and Train of Thought where they had a heavier' feel yet still maintained that core of dream theater. I would have preferred them to continue to evolve rather than devolve.
They certainly aren't, as mirigalavurs o suggested, better than Dream Theater, but Symphony X is an amazing band with a talent for composing amazing power metal albums.

Despite the Iced Earth-esque revolving door of lineup changes, Symphony X is one of the most amazing bands this genre has to offer. I put them right up there with the very best European bands.
Symphony X is an awesome band, with Iconoclast proving, once and for all, that they are better than Dream Theater.
Picked up Iconoclast recently and must say, it's one hell of an album. Electric Messiah deserves to see mainstream rock/metal radio play. Maybe it already does - idk - the only radio I listen to is Pandora :P
I saw them this past weekend as well, and they were unbelievable .
darknightz0
Saw them this past weekend, these guys put on a hell of a live show. Definitely see them if you get a chance. Was not even a huge fan, but that live show was great stuff. Im a convert now
I love that Russell Allen at times sounds like Steve Walsh of Kansas and other times sounds like the late Ronnie James Dio and yet still has his own indentifiabl e voice. Truly a remarkable singer.
ahpitre
One of the few drummers who can actually stand toe to toe with Mike Portnoy is Jason Rullo. Guy rocks. Also, if you love great drummers, check out Bobby Jarzombek (RIOT, Halford), Simon Phillips (Toto, Michael Schenker, many others), Rod Morgestein (Jordan Ruddes, Dixie Dreggs, etc.). An my favorite Steve Smith (Tony Macalpine, Vinnie Moore, Buddy Rich tribute, Vital Information, Journey, GHS, Vital Tech Tones, etc.).
fink9000
A Metal band from my home state? Hell yes.
thanks Pandora! \M/
i love theme based albums. 3 inches of blood is a fond metal band of mine that tells epic tales in all of their songs similar to this band
Iconoclast added!!
For real Andrew I want Iconoclast up here!
I wish pandora had their first two albums as well.
Iconoclast is awesome! Can't wait for Pandora to upload it.
