T-Model Ford

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist T-Model Ford (James Lewis Carter Ford) played a raw-edged, visceral style of blues from the Mississippi Delta, accompanied much of the time by his drummer, Spam (Tommy Lee Miles). Ford caught a break when he opened up on a national tour for Buddy Guy and his band, playing respectable theaters and some festivals, but he was chronically under-recorded. He began playing guitar late in life and hadn't really toured much outside the Mississippi Delta until the 1990s and into the new millennium. He was well received at Antone's nightclub in Austin during the South by Southwest Music Festival, at the Chicago Blues Festival, and on tour with Guy and his band. When not on the road, playing mostly blues nightclubs, T-Model Ford and Spam set their instruments and amps up on Nelson Street in Greenville, Mississippi, where they would play for as much as eight hours straight. Ford's sound was raw, unadulterated Delta blues, and the music on his albums tends to sound sparse but is very rhythmic, given that his sole accompanist was the drummer Spam. His albums, all for the Fat Possum label, now based in Los Angeles, include Pee-Wee Get My Gun (1997), You Better Keep Still (1999), She Ain't None of Your'n (2000), and Bad Man (2002). After a six-year break from recording -- though he toured regularly -- Ford returned to the bins on the Alive imprint with Ladies Man in 2010; he followed it with Taledragger in 2011. Two years later, he died at home of respiratory failure after a short time in hospice care. ~ Richard Skelly, Rovi

Reminds me a bit of Junior Kimbrough and RL Burnside... and John Lee Hooker! Even though my favourite blues artist is Howlin' Wolf - I quite dig the more hypnotic brand of blues, as well. Ambient blues, they should call it.

Since da early 90's Was n to Jr. Kimbrough n R L. Burnside, then heard Cedell Davis n T model few years later, man fat possum show did come up with a whole lotta killer blues acts in that short amount of time. All those men were amazing, n that north Mississippi hills style they produced was damne good. RIP to em all.

RIP T Model Ford. One of the best not many know about. You had a love for the blues and it showed in your music. You will be missed by everyone that has ever heard you.

saw T-Model at Finnigans Wake in Alexandria, LA. Had a great night that night. Sat only feet from him while I drank beer and scotch for most of the evening. Hope I get to see him again!

He's an inspiration. . . recollecting he started playing guitar at age 57-58? Saw him at the Chicago Blues Festival. Good stuff

I think people sometimes confuse an "old man from Mississippi with a guitar" for a "blues legend."

T-Model Ford definitely has the blues attitude and is still a ladies man at his old age. However, most of his stuff lacks the true creativity of the blues.

I saw him in concert only to get disappointed because half way into the set I could no longer tell the difference between his songs. All of the other "similar artists" according to Pandora are much better.

I had the pleasure of sitting five feet away from T down at Red's in Clarksdale, MS (Juke Joint Festival). He sat there and played for hours with various people that were sitting in with him. It was cool. If you get a chance to go to the Blues Festival, you best go!!

Yeah, just saw T-Model play a bar in San Francisco- good times, "Jack Daniels Time" more like it. I walked up to him with my girlfriend to get a picture, and he looked at her (she's 23) and said, "hey there, you know they call me a lady's man." Then he smiled for the camera, shook my hand, and started talking up another young lady while sipping his glass of whiskey. Classic bluesman, I reckon.

Saw him in a mostly empty club one night jammin' out. I had no idea who he was when I walked in. I came in to get a gig for myself. I left the club forgetting why I originally came there and found myself a fan of Model-T for life! He also was really nice and talked to me for 20 minutes after he played.
