T. Rex (Tyrannosaurus Rex)

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Marc Bolan was one of the major glam rock figures of the early '70s, especially in England. After releasing his debut solo single, "The Wizard," and its follow-ups, "The Third Degree" and "Hippy Gumbo," on Decca Records in the U.K. in 1965-1966, he joined the band John's Children in 1967. The same year, he and percussionist Steve Peregine Took formed Tyrannosaurus Rex, an acoustic duo. They made three albums, My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair but Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows (1968), Prophets, Seers and Sages, the Angels of the Ages (1968), and Unicorn (1969), then split, with Bolan retaining the band name and teaming up with Mickey Finn on the electric Beard of Stars (1970).

By the end of 1970, with the name abbreviated to T. Rex, Bolan and Finn scored a U.K. hit with "Ride a White Swan," the first of ten straight Top Ten hits, and the album T. Rex. Adding bass player Steve Curry and drummer Bill Fifield, T. Rex expanded into a full-fledged rock & roll band, and scored a number one hit with "Hot Love" and another with "Get It On." (Under the title "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," the song became T. Rex's only substantial U.S. hit, making the Top Ten in 1972.) This was followed by the landmark album Electric Warrior (1971), which topped the U.K. charts and included the single "Jeepster." Then came "Telegram Sam," T. Rex's third U.K. number one. "Metal Guru" became T. Rex's fourth number one in May 1972. (During this period, with T.Rextasy hitting Britain, numerous reissues also charted.) The next new T. Rex album, The Slider, became a Top Ten hit in July 1972. T. Rex's seventh straight Top Ten single, "Children of the Revolution," peaked in the charts in September, followed by "Solid Gold Easy Action" in December. In March 1973 came "Twentieth Century Boy," the ninth T. Rex Top Ten single, and the Top Ten album Tanx. In June, "The Groover" became the band's tenth and final Top Ten single.

In August, Bolan tested the waters for using his own name on records, issuing the non-charting "Blackjack" single credited to Marc Bolan with Big Carrot, but then he retreated to the T. Rex rubric, though the original group was fragmenting. Bolan and T. Rex's commercial and critical fortunes declined afterwards, as they released Zinc Alloy and the Hidden Riders of Tomorrow (1974), Bolan's Zip Gun (1975), Futuristic Dragon (1976), and Dandy in the Underworld (1977). Bolan died in an automobile accident in 1977, and his work has been reissued frequently in the U.K. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

First concert I ever saw. Opened for three dog night in 74. Awesome
I love Marc with all of my heart. He is just so lovely and I love everything he has ever done. It's a shame that I am in the wrong generation, and I'll never be able to meet Marc. He is my inspiration. He is one of my main reasons to start making music. Marc will never be forgotten, and I will always remember him ❤
Oh s**t i always thought this was the stones
I am just a jeepster for your love... The way Bolan died was he never learned to drive a car believe it or not. His wife or girlfriend was driving and went off the road and hit something, killing Marc.
Get it in!! Yes!! Love it!! ❌❤❌❤

Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of you life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you've started reading so don't stop. This is so scary put this on at least 5 songs in 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lover's name will come on the screen in big letters. This is so scary because it actually works!

Keep a little Marc in your heart <3
The thing about T. Rex is you either love their music or you don't. Marc Bolan voice is one of a kind. Great hand full of songs.

I have been addicted to the song "Dandy in the Underworld" since first listen. This band is cosmic ear wonder with vibes of soul explosion and bright angels of tone.

If I'm not mistaken... I seem to recall Elton John on keyboards( Reginald Dwight?) sometime in the early 70s, great show!
I enjoy this sound
f**king music, literally
20th Century Boy is one of my favorites, so is Metal Guru
Hey carson, you could not be more wrong. Rip off is a great song, the slow tunes are beautiful and his influence is huge (Oasis for one).
Guys, I hate to say it but Bang A Gong and Jeepster is all there is. Every thing they did after sounds the same only worse.
Had the 45 for Bang a Gong when I was a kid, wore it out!
jeepster is on electric warrior

There are so many mix's of this song that it's hard to pick which version is best. I have the import album wiith Marc in front of the Marshall stack. Great showman and groove maker. The remake by Power Station was good - RIP Robert Palmer.

Sorry, amemolo, but, yes, I think you are the only one . . .
I'm a classic rock aficionado and thought I knew a lot about the subject ... but I always thought Bang a Gong was a Rolling Stones tune. Am I the only one?
Wow!!!! This is freaking great I am impressed ..I really enjoyed this music growing up.. Dig it!!!!

THE PROUD STATE OF DESMOINES, IOWA WILL ALWAYS BE IN OUR ROCK & ROLL HALL!!!
The Electric Warrior cover art almost looks like a neanderthal sitting while hunched over.

I saw T Rex open for... ready?... Three Dog Night in 1972 in Boston. With 13,000 kids and parents in the audience waiting to hear joy to the world, Mark Bolan came out stroking his guitar between his knees. Funniest thing I ever saw until two hours later, when 3 Dog Night actually stopped a song in mid lyric because the fans in front were tossing a soon to be passed out girl up on stage for a kiss. Chuck Negron challenged any fan to fight the band... T Rex was lame in comparison.

Love Marc Bolan! He was so sexy and that voice...just wow!
I still love him. He's up there arrogantly singin' and grovin' while Pete Ham humbly plays guitar.
My favorite is Jeepster. But I can never find it. Which album is it on?
Love this song: Rip Off by T-Rex

Never heard of Marc Bolan or T.Rex until this year. It's a shame that they did not have much success here in the United States. The Slider is a great album. Later in his career, the music wasn't as good though.
Killed by Grace Jones, a sad fate indeed
