The Tah-Dahs were formed by singer/songwriter/guitarist Roy Ivy after he had abruptly become a professional musician at the age of 26 when he found himself a member of the sprawling, 25-member band
the Polyphonic Spree . After helping record the group's debut album, The Beginning Stages Of..., and touring with them, he returned to his home in Dallas and assembled the first version of the Tah-Dahs, a sextet. That lineup did not last, but Ivy regrouped with drummer James Porter and bassist Charlie Papathanasiou, turning the band into a trio that built up a following, leading to a contract with the independent label Undeniable Records and the release of the Tah-Dahs' debut album,
