Tallboys

While it had existed in infancy at Oberlin College, Tallboys began in earnest once Aziza Wishnow, Vanessa Roworth, and Sheila Donovan graduated and reunited in New York City. And when the project finally did pick up steam, awesome rock star names were the first order of business. Drummer Wishnow became Aziza Vis a Vis, guitarist Roworth was now Vanessa Van Ness, and vocalist/guitarist Donovan was reborn as Sheila Sixteen. Musically, the combo drew liberally from the post-punk canon, marrying power-drill guitar lines to jittery bass and Sixteen's manic vocal histrionics. In October 2003 Tallboys recorded an EP for the New Jersey indie Jak Attak, and caught a big break a month later when the Yeah Yeah Yeahs invited them out on tour. That jaunt brought them through the new year, at which point Tallboys began preparing for the February 2004 release of Scallywag Tag. By this point bassist Ryan Byzantine had been added to the lineup. ~ Johnny Loftus
