Thrice

The post-hardcore quartet Thrice formed in 1998 in Irvine, California. Guitarist/vocalist Dustin Kensrue, guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge, and drummer Riley Breckenridge all knew each other from high school and the neighborhood skate park, and the usual round of practices, music competitions, and local gigs helped hone their new band's sound. By late 1999, Thrice had amassed enough material to cut a proper record. Working with Death by Stereo's Paul Miner, the quartet recorded 12 tracks and self-released the Identity Crisis LP in April 2000. More gigs followed, and Thrice's mounting buzz sparked the interest of Hopeless/Sub City's Louis Posen.

Posen signed the band in 2001, reissued Identity Crisis, and put Thrice on tour with Samiam. Tours with Midtown and Hot Rod Circuit followed, and eventually Thrice reentered the studio with producer Brian McTernan. Although those recording sessions proved to be a trying period for the young group, The Illusion of Safety emerged and was later released in February 2002. Naturally, the band hit the road in support of the album, this time playing concerts alongside Further Seems Forever and Face to Face. Thrice also began headlining shows for the first time that year, and major labels began to take notice. Eventually, Island Records signed the band in June. A stint on the Warped Tour followed, and Thrice spent the fall playing club dates with Hot Water Music and Coheed & Cambria.

February 2003 found Thrice returning to the studio with McTernan, but this time Island Records was footing the bill. The focused effort The Artist in the Ambulance appeared in August 2003, and Thrice supported it with an ambitious slate of tour dates that included jaunts to Europe. The band also continued to involve itself with charitable organizations, having actively supported nonprofits and charities since signing with Sub City (the charitable arm of Hopeless Records). Portions of the proceeds from Artist in the Ambulance went to the Syrentha J. Salvo Endowment, which provided financial assistance for cancer screenings.

A new studio effort, the ambitious Vheissu, followed in October 2005, while the EP Red Sky appeared early the next year. A slew of new material arrived in 2007 and 2008, including a four-disc conceptual project entitled The Alchemy Index (issued in two double-disc releases: The Alchemy Index, Vols. 1-2 and The Alchemy Index, Vols. 3-4) and two separate releases of live material, The MySpace Transmissions and Live at the House of Blues. Meanwhile, the studio effort Beggars appeared in 2009. For their next album, the bandmembers went off on their own to work on new music before heading into Red Bull Studios with Dave Schiffman to put the songs to tape. The result was their seventh album, Major/Minor, which was released in the summer of 2011. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi

i'm disappointed in this bio. it should be noted that thrice's first wave of touring success was the plea for peace take action tour 2001, where they toured with alkaline trio and at times even shared the stage together.... . a s much as i love samiam, alk3 was 1000x more popular at the time and it was they who were selling out the shows that made this band famous.....
they are a pretty good band...

They have definitely matured over the years, and it shows in the lyrics and the progressions of their musical flow. Each record has something to say. I'm sad these guys won't be together anymore. Maybe that means Dustin will explore his solo talents.
I used to dig Thrice a lot years ago but theyve kinda fell off my radar the last 5 or 6 years. Totally dig the seeing Red/Screamin g at the walls track though, they would do well playing old school punk/hardcor e . I was suprised, it didn't sound like them at all at first. Cool though
Lol. Thrice is the best ever. Don't even try to argue. (Yeah, I do think I'm funny.)
Listened to some Thrice someone liked on my Zune, liked it downloaded some but hadn't listened yet. Added to Pandora got Digital Sea, thumbs down. Wondering if I was wrong about them.
I'm gonna agree with Matt Bailey on this one. There are simply too many bands for you to say that. I can name quite a few bands, that doesn't mean that Thrice isn't a very good band.
agree somewhat is parade though. Masters of their instruments, amazing lyrics, awesome live performances , the evolution of their sound without selling out or losing touch, and the genius behind their work. It's mind-blowing
You're saying they're the most talented band ever. Out of the hundreds of talented bands that have existed. You really don't know how anyone could argue that? I like Thrice too, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Thrice is the most talented band ever. I don't know how anyone can argue that
they are not prog rock... that must be a joke. tool is prog dream theatre is prog between the buried and me are prog. i used to love thrice but then they went folk not my type of music but they are a good band. and omg shut up about religion they are not bible thumpers. and just because hes cathilic doesnt make them a christian rock band. the guys from slayer are catholic. soooooo . @ icspwnz wish they wernt christian. why what sre u muslim you sound like and idiot they have been
like their older stuff. wish they werent christian, that kinda taints them for me.
Saw them in concert a few weeks ago, best show I've ever been to
One of the most underrated talented bands out there. These guys are true musical geniouses both instrumental l y and lyrically. They offer more than just something to rock to, they offer self-awarene s s and self-discove r y . Their lyrics are versitle and can have different meanings for different people. They have definately influenced me in a positive way and have helped me shape and find my true self. I love all their albums alike, and depending on my current mood I have something to listen to.
reminds me of high school. good times.

Thrice is the best EVER!!!!
I hear slight similarities .
I don't really see the resemblance to He Is Legend (the station I am listening to), but I like them anyway!
Thrice is amazing. They have such a huge range of sounds. They can do anything. Every single album is phenomenal.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Thrice!!! More than anything!!
@Ryan I am on the exact same page as you, brother. I was very disappointed in Vheissu but then I pulled my head out of my a** and listened to it. Each album is so different but so similar at the same time. I will always enjoy the quality music that Thrice puts out and love the progression of each album!
It's difficult to pick my favorite album...it changes depending on where I'm at it seems. That, and they're all fantastic.
Who's ready for 9-20-2011?!! ! !
and on a side note, i do have all of thrice's albums. their early stuff is alright. they have always been a quality band when speaking of their song themes. but vheissu is a cut above. when i first bought it i was disappointed , but after actually LISTENING to it, i have come to appreciate the mood and intention behind the music as well as their way of painting a picture of the utmost despair and hope.
wow. well i can see that i am the ONLY thrice fan who also appreciates the intricacies of progressive music. its truly bizarre that so many people can look at their original raw "garage band" socal sound and consider it better than their far expanded progressive (both lyrically and instrumental l y ) albums like vheissu, alchemy index, and beggars. it's honestly a shame how many people choose to consciously ignore the quality of musical depth.
@Kevin McCort - this. I actually love each of their albums for what they are. Kensrue is by far my favorite songwriter and The Alchemy Index (especially Earth and Water) is my favorite album ever...not that anyone cares, but I am a Thrice fanboy-man so I had to blab.
knovak226
illusion of safety is the best, but the alchemy index 3&4 are pretty damn intense. beggars is well done too. vheissu was the worst
Vheissu? Really? Ive loved this band since 2000 when they came out with their first & best album, Identity Crisis. Next in line that comes in with a close 2nd is their second album, The Illusion of Safety. They started fading away from their slash metal type guitar melodies, and started playing slow soft s**t. I still love the band, but I havent listened to any of their records after purchasing vheissu. I was truly disappointed after listening to the album, and gave up hope. Let me know if their
Vheissu is by far their best album so far in my opinion. It has all almost all of their elements in one. Still love all of their other stuff and can't wait to see what they produce in the future.
Kensrue is a lyrical genius.
I agree with Wilson Hays people listen to crap these days they need to listen rock and good bands like this one
i just accidentally pierced my tongue with a sunflower seed shell.
They sound like they went mainstream
Thrice is my favorite band, hands down. What other band can try so many differing styles, and manage to master them all?

It's a shame they're so underrated. Instead of listening to this amazing music, people listen to crap. They have no idea what they're missing. No idea.
I have been a follower of Thrice since they released Identity Crisis...I grew with this band and have found each album suitable for my life at the time! I can still go back and listen to Phoenix Ignition and remember my senior year of high school. The same holds true for all of their albums. At each stage in my life I needed the sound that they provided, they are my favorite band! Sure each album is different but that shows the world that they are in control of their own thoughts, ideas and musi
joythief1215
thrice is amazing!
brother_nal
I love all of their stuff! Each album is different, but that's why they're so good!
suck your mama's c**k, you emo, ginger kid.
sanchito182
This new Thrice doesn't hold up well to the old Thrice. AKA I will not buy any more of their new albums. Please go back to your roots!
so do you on your own c**k
how the f**k is system of a down, similar too thrice? They suck!
I wish they didnt get so soft
If I am not mistaken, after the Artist in the Ambulance, Dustin began exploring more toward a folk style. His side project uses more instruments he used to play and this in turn influenced Thrice's songs over the years. The band is not Christian, some members are which brings up slight references without throwing beliefs at your face. This is a band with a RARE quality of sincerity in their voice regardless of style of music. In my opinion, one of the most talented and underrated bands in music.
THRICE THRICE THRICE THRICE THRICE THRICE THRICE THRICE THRICE THRICE THRICE.

:)
You need to do what the public wants to be a "sell out". Their popularity never increased significantl y after Vheissu came out. Many people actually hated on them for their change in sound. I was a hater at first bc Illusion of safety is one of my favorite albums. But there new stuff isn't bad, they just grew up a little. Anyone who bad mouths Dustin Kensrue is a... (finish my sentence please)
This band took the time to explore several different regions of rock music. They started out with a fast paced metal-punk feel and went to a softer, more progressive sound with Artist. What is really impressive is how they refused to sell out and go completely mainstream at that point. They released Vheissu, which took their sound in a completely different direction, dispite all the cries from typical scene kids to play more of the same. Thrice has my deep respect for staying true to themselves.
@Chip Carder...you are a jackass!
@Chip Carder: that's not true at all. After The Artist in the Ambulance they turned to a softer, more progressive sound. I personally think their newer stuff is better, but it's a matter of preference really. They did not sell out or use themselves up. Sorry for basically attacking your opinion but I had to step in and defend one of my favorite bands (and anyway it was aggressively put).
after the artist and the ambulance this band turned for the worse. Maybe they only had a few good cd's in them. But more likely they "sold out". I hate saying that, but they suck a** now and I am dismayed.
There are Christian undertones in the songs but they are far from worship gospel tunes. Even as an atheist I find Dustin's musings on life and god insightful. As for their best album... it depends on how 'heavy' you like your music. Going further back in their discography will reveal much more screaming, while the Alchemy Index is (on the whole) much more mellow, with the exception of Vol. I Fire. Vheissu and Beggars have a good mix of the two styles. You really can't go wrong with this band.
email.steveh o n g
Only Dustin is Christian. The others.. I don't think so.
the members of thrice are christian... . t h e y r e not a christian band
