Avantasia was an all-star side project headed by Tobias Sammet, lead singer of the prog-tinged German power metal band Edguy. While recording a guest appearance from Blind Guardian singer Hansi Kursch with his regular band, Sammet conceived of a massive-scale rock opera featuring the cream of the current power metal scene. He spent a year composing the material, named the "band" Avantasia, and recruited a variety of vocalists to tell his story: Gamma Ray's Kai Hansen, Stratovarius' Timo Tolkki, Virgin Steele's David DeFeis, Angra's Andre Matos, Warrior's Rob Rock, and Within Temptation's Sharon Den Adel. For the backing band, Sammet gathered guitarists Jens Ludwig (Edguy) and Henjo Richter (Gamma Ray), bassist Markus Grosskopf (Helloween), and drummer Alex Holzwarth (Rhapsody). The album, The Metal Opera, was filled with tried-and-true fantasy themes and anthemic, progressive pomp-metal; it was released by Century Media in the summer of 2001 and was followed by the sequel, The Metal Opera II, the following year in 2002. The band returned years later with their Scarecrow Saga, a three album piece consisting of The Scarecrow, released in 2008, and The Wicked Symphony and Angel of Babylon, both released in 2010. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
@ST33L: They still do - the problem is that Pandora has Avantasia listed twice. The Scarecrow is the only album listed under the "Tobias Sammet's..." version, all the other albums are just filed under "Avantasia".
I adore Avantasia, especially the Scarecrow album. Loved Wicked Symphony, & think I'll like the whole saga, but I haven't yet been able to get my hands on Angel of Babylon. I think it may have a different release date in the U.S. Anyone know why I can't find it in stores?
@Sarah Blake Hilton: 4th and 5th album actually, The Wicked Symphony and Angel of Babylon got a simultaneous release. And they are both awesome (and not just because Jorn Lande sings on most of the tracks).
There's lots to like about Avantasia and Edguy. Listening to Avantasia will turn you on to a number of other Power Metal vocalists and their bands. Some are good, some not so much, but like Pandora it's a good way to uncover more bands that you might like.
There are three Avantasia albums out now and a fourth one is due in early 2010, I believe. Don't forget to check out the Lost in Space EPs. There's a lot of "B-side" material that's really just as good as the Scarecrow tracks.
love the metal opera...but I dont see it listed. eventhough i know ive listened to it on pandora... i bet its under "avantasia", not "toby's avantasia". weird
Wow, if you like Edguy you'll like Avantasia too! Or, to quote D'Artagnan in 'The Three Musketeers,' if you don't, there's something wrong with you . . .

Who knew there were so many chicks that enjoy power metal?
